Religion is a big part of life for most Indians and a prayer room is an integral space in every house, be it big or small. In Hinduism, there is profound significance to allocating a dedicated space for prayer inside a home. The room is considered a sacred space from which positive energy radiates to other rooms.
It is well known that Vastu Shastra plays an important role in Indian architecture and that goes doubly so for puja rooms. There are quite a few do’s and don'ts when it comes to the location and decoration of the puja room.
A religious Indian household will try to incorporate a space for prayer in their house in accordance with Vastu Shastra, if possible, even if there are space constraints.
Homeowners usually try to integrate a puja room in the house design right in the beginning, during the planning stage. If not, it can be included later by building a faux wall. Sometimes, due to space constraints, it may not be possible to have an entire room set aside for prayer. But, these days, there are innovative and gorgeous alternatives available to create a serene and attractive space for prayer.
Like every other room in the house, the prayer area serves a purpose as well as adds to the aesthetic of the house. Here we take a look at some interesting and innovative ways in which a
puja room can be designed to look traditional and stylish.
In houses and large apartments, it is possible to create a pooja room interior design which is elaborate and ornate. Even small rooms, with clever designing, can achieve the right spiritual ambiance.
Marble is an auspicious stone that is used in temples and in making idols and is an ideal material to decorate your puja room. A pooja room marble design exudes a sense of purity and serenity. Different shades of marble can be used on the floors, the walls and on the pedestals to create beautiful patterns. A dome shaped faux ceiling with religious patterns or designs would give the effect of an actual temple when one enters the room.
Not everyone has the space or budget to create large, elaborate marble rooms for prayer. But a very traditional puja room can be created in a modern home with some innovative designing. For instance, tiled floors in red, or a black and white checked floor, and a veneer panel as a backdrop will create an interesting modern home temple design. Add screen doors with bells, wooden pedestals and hanging lamps to create a beautiful puja room which will not look out of place in a modern home.
In smaller apartments, a study, a utility room or even a balcony can be converted into a small puja room. But, the constraint in space should not deter one from making the space beautiful and inspiring. Marble and glass can make small spaces look large. The clever use of glass, marble and mirrors can make even a small space feel tranquil and serene and ideal for prayer and meditation.
If an entire room cannot be converted into a puja room, a small area in any room can be partitioned off to create a beautiful prayer space.
Living rooms are usually large and have enough space for a small, enclosed puja area. Ornate traditional wooden jali panels make beautiful partitions to create a secluded space for prayer and meditation.
A minimal and simple puja corner will fit into any kind of home décor. Glass pooja rooms are very popular nowadays, and are ideal for contemporary themed homes. For instance, a glass enclosed puja room with a frosted glass backdrop and underlit glass shelves will look amazing installed anywhere in the house.
A blend of wood and glass is the perfect combination for a semi-private mandir design. A glass enclosure with marble shelves and a mirrored background that reflects the light from the lamps will make the space seem larger and create an ethereal effect. Stained-glass insets of deities add to the décor of the house on one side and to the sanctity of the puja room on the other, blending both halves harmoniously.
Sometimes, even squeezing in small pooja room designs for home is difficult in Indian apartments. To overcome this hurdle, innovative designers have created the pooja mandir which are stand-alone pieces of furniture that can be used to house the Gods and for prayer.
A compact wooden pooja mandir with beautiful jali work and a traditional dome will add to the aesthetic of your home. Add enough storage shelves at the bottom to keep your prayer books, camphor and agarbathis and it becomes a functional design. Puja mandirs are very versatile and can be placed anywhere in the house and they are easy to take along when moving houses.
A beautiful carved marble puja mandir is perfect in an elegant living room. Use a backlit glass panel behind the idols to give the space a mystical air. The glass doors give the feeling of an open puja room even when they are shut. But a marble mandir is heavy and may not be the best option if you move houses often.
Puja units have taken the place of puja rooms in most Indian homes as they are neat, serve a purpose, look traditional and can easily blend into a modern home.
In a traditional home, a puja unit with ornately decorated jalli shutters will fit right in. Hanging brass lamps on either side, soft-focus lighting to illuminate the corner and a richly woven rug to bring the space together will make this functional corner a beautiful addition to your living room décor.
Any room in the house can be used to house a puja unit. Popular choices are studies, utility rooms and pantries. Simple wooden puja units are the best choice as they will blend in with any kind of home décor and will fit into the scheme of any room.
A puja unit can fit neatly into a display unit when designed well. It can either be a concealed space with shutters that can be shut when not being used or you can make it an open shelf, add a decorative illuminated backdrop and marble pedestals for your idols to make it a showpiece in itself.
