This kids’ room upgrade is an inspiration for every parent

Like most siblings, Diya and Dev shared a room as infants. As they grew, so did their personalities. Once they entered their teenage years, they decided to have spaces of their own. In this edition of our ongoing series, Designers Hack, we walk you through two children’s bedroom upgrades.

With Garima Agarwal and her team’s expertise of over 16 years, her brand Peekaboo Interiors, based in Chennai, transformed two rooms, that were once a playroom and the kids’ shared bedroom into two separate bedrooms. Five years ago, these rooms were originally designed by them in such a way that it could eventually be converted into two bedrooms easily. The team believes in a sustainable approach by designing rooms that are built-to-grow. This means that few to none such structural changes were needed while redoing the space.

The brand explains exactly how they made the transformation in the video below:

In this edition of our ongoing series, Designers Hack, we walk you through two children’s bedroom upgrades. With Garima Agarwal and her team’s expertise of over 16 years, her brand Peekaboo Interiors, based in Chennai, transformed two rooms that were once a playroom and the kids’ shared bedroom into two separate bedrooms.

Here are a few tips to get the best out of a child’s room:

1.    HAVE A CONVERSATION WITH THE CHILD BEFORE IDEATION
Children, especially in their teenage years, have certain preferences. Before beginning ideation, it's a good idea to understand what the child wants in order to manifest their ideas and thoughts in their rooms.

2. DESIGN AROUND THE CHILD’S PERSONALITY
The room should be designed around the child’s needs, hobbies and lifestyle. In Diya’s case here, they added comfortable seats for when she hosts slumber parties. While for Dev, the room has many sports elements showing his love for the same.

3. CREATE AN INTERACTIVE SPACE
Children like to interact and connect with their surroundings. This is a good opportunity to build areas that allow them to associate with their space and create an atmosphere of belonging. For example, A simple pegboard allows  children to arrange a variety of things in their own manner. Another example is the play bunk that gives the child an opportunity to climb and have a secluded place in their room.

4. KEEP CHILD SAFETY IN MIND
While designing furniture like bunk beds and plays it’s important to keep in mind their agility and whether they can navigate through the room easily. Keeping the furniture rounded or not too sharp-edged will avoid any clumsy mishaps.

5. SELECT COLOURS CONSCIOUSLY
Selecting softer base colours is always the best way to go. This is mainly because in their growing years kids are fickle minded and love to experiment every other day. If the base is neutral they can add on any sort of decor without harming the overall look. Don’t be afraid to experiment though!

7. CHOOSE BUILT-TO-GROW FIXTURES
Beds, desks and shelves are all long-term investments and so it's smart to choose pieces that will be useful for years to come. The colours or upholstery can change with changes in choices but the base staying the same will be cost effective in the long run.
