In the studio of Richa Bahl

Designer Richa Bahl's charming studio in Mumbai's Bandra suburb has a susegad feel to it

Designer Richa Bahl’s eclectic laid-back studio space, housed in a charming Bandra bungalow, gave us a distinctly susegad feel when we entered on a busy Monday morning. Add her golden cocker spaniel Mr Khan to this setting, stretching out languidly as we proceeded with our photo shoot and we were definitely transported in our minds to a Goa frame of mind.

Richa and her team moved into this space in July last year. “I didn’t want to move in to a typical concrete office space. I was very clear that I wanted a heritage or old bungalow feel to the space, wherever it may be. I spent a lot of time hunting for the perfect property.”

And she found the proverbial pot of real estate gold at the end of this search with her discovery of an old school cottage property in Mumbai’s Bandra suburb.

“It was a beautiful space as a basic structure with high ceilings, a wooden staircase leading up to the office, a vintage railing balcony that needed to be fixed. We had to work on strengthening the space as it was an old structure,” says Richa. She wanted the studio to have minimal work done on it.

“Since it’s my design studio, I renovated it to my taste but I also explored different patterns and textures, so that it could become a live showcase area for clients to understand various finishes. So we have IPS, stone, tiles, wood, metal and textured glass in the studio,” says Richa.

Busy juggling numerous design projects at the time that we meet her for an interview, Richa clearly finds her work nirvana in this serene studio. We are only envious that we can't stay here longer.
