YOO2 Rio de Janeiro
The interiors of YOO2 Rio pay a fitting tribute to the city’s vibrant culture and eclectic vibe
In one of the most vivacious cities in the world, the team at Yoo has created a design destination of its own right. The boutique hotel, YOO2 Rio de Janeiro, borrows from its location on the beach as well as the host city’s vibrant culture, design, art and music. Since it opened in July 2016, the property has been providing a design scheme that is graphic and bold, eclectic and relaxed yet sophisticated; telling a story that’s rooted in Brazilian culture and reflecting its tropical climate.
Throughout the hotel – in the lobby, restaurant and bar – dark interiors, created using timber, black stone or black and white tiles, contrast with bold colours. Local influences can also be spotted, for instance, the lift shaft in the lobby has been hand-painted by Rio based graffiti artist Marcelo Ment. The hand painted corridors on all floors reflect different colours set against a bold geometric black and grey floor.
The rooms incorporate elements such as black and white palm print ceilings and geometric black, white and grey handmade encaustic tiles for flooring. Bathrooms use polished concrete with local white and blue tiling, and feature generous walk-in showers as well as vintage Brazilian books. Additionally, the larger rooms offer spectacular views of Sugar Loaf Mountain and Christ the Redeemer statue.
Picking bold colours and geometric patterns was a design choice for more than just its aesthetics; it’s to encourage the guests to mingle with the city. It’s no wonder that the hotel has a Carnival package which includes access to daily pool parties at The Rooftop, a cabana-styled, poolside bar, as well as free entries to some of the city’s most exclusive and trendy clubs.
A bare wall in the lobby has been resurrected with a rack full of potted plants. Can you spot the odd pineapple in the middle?
A colourful headboard stands out against the otherwise monochromatic walls and bed linen.
The lift shaft features hand-paintings by Rio based graffiti artist Marcelo Ment.
