Our round up of hotels that rank high on the design antennae
We fancy a plush five star experience as much as we yearn for a quiet, humble homestay. A boutique hotel calls out to us as much as a charming villa. But the one thing that is constant through it all is our desire to be surrounded by all things pretty. There’s nothing that excites us more than gorgeous décor underlined with character and quirk. And given that we are still hungover from our New Year celebrations, and the resolution to take more holidays still fresh on our minds, we decided to snoop around and put together a list of places that fit well on our travel list for this year.
1. Ayana Fort Kochi
Much like many of the gorgeous properties lining the cultural promenade of Kochi, Ayana Fort Kochi too comes with its share of history. Housed in a 200-year-old building, what once was a Portuguese court house, it is now a chic, boutique hotel. And with the Biennale influencing and inspiring most new offerings in Kochi, this one too wears its arty shrug with finesse. Black and white chequered flooring, furniture in muted colours and traditional architectural elements make it a perfect blend of the old and the new. And did we say a rooftop pool to complete the picture?
2. Taj Baghvan, Pench
After a day out in the jungles of Pench spotting the majestic tiger, there’s nothing like coming back to a bungalow reminiscent of the luxurious 1950s safari style. If the safari drive hasn’t drained the last bit of adrenalin of you, then you can muster up enough imagination to be transported to a life back then. High ceilings, earthy interiors in copper and pale turquoise hues, guest areas fitted with delicate tiles, woven hyacinth furniture, plush sofas and giant ebony chests afford the perfect ambience to recount your stories from the safari. Our favourite spot – the covered rooftop ‘machan’, it is just perfect for a sleepout, looking at the stars and enjoying the cool jungle breeze.
3. W Hotel, Goa
Every once in a while we love a glamorous holiday – one that comes with all frills attached. As is the norm with any W hotel in the world, W Goa stands for luxury and extravagance. Think mirror panels, plush seating, pop of colours at every turn, and unparalleled views to match. It’s time to enjoy the scenic beaches of this coastal state in style.
