Old world glamour meets modern luxury at The Beekman, in Manhattan’s most dynamic and historical downtown neighbourhood
Nestled amid what is quintessentially New York - bright lights, bustling streets, and lively crowds, The Beekman is the young, boho cousin of the erstwhile Temple Court. Summon enough imagination, and you may even hear the Bard wax eloquently, given that the site hosted the debut of Shakespeare's Hamlet in November 1871.
Built in 1881, this granite, red Philadelphia brick and tan Dorchester stone landmark in the Queen Anne style, has a stunning nine-storey Victorian atrium and majestic pyramidal skylight. The upper levels of the atrium are decorated with Victorian wrought-iron railings and balustrades and ornamented with flowers, dragons, and sunbursts. On the main floor the atrium forms a stage where guests can gather in a series of intimate seating areas amid decadent décor.
The Beekman’s iconic “turrets”, each have private rooftop terraces overlooking One World Trade Centre, the Woolworth Building and City Hall Park. The décor is a mix of Victorian vintage and Mid-Century Modern. We love the patchwork of upholstered vintage Persian rugs that wrap the reception desk adorned with antique glass lamps and a polished timber top.
The Beekman seems like just the place for a dose of history cloaked in luxury.
The bar room in the atrium is furnished with bookshelves, leather club chairs, Oriental rugs, and portraits of famous authors on the walls.
Large windows offer a view of the many historical buildings in the neighbourhood, making for a fabulous nook.
The bedroom is furnished with a mix of antique and custom furnishings, studded leather headboards and contemporary colours.
The quirky, mod lamp uses a stone figurine pedestal as a base, with a contemporary lampshade.
