The interiors of this beautifully restored Taru Villas - Lighthouse Street take you back in time to the Colonial era

Bathed in white, Taru Villas - Lighthouse Street, Galle blends period pieces and Sri Lankan antiques with a clean, simple aesthetic. We love how the bright interiors feature dark woods, textured rugs and ornate pieces that pair perfectly with plush sofas, uncomplicated lines, and the colour scheme of grey and beige.

The 19th century villa’s interiors were imagined by iconic Sri Lankan designer, Nayantara Fonseka, better known as Taru. They display her trademark airy spaces with traditional elements and contemporary details. The living area for instance, is flooded with natural light streaming through arched windows and skylights in the gabled ceiling. The wood shutters with sheer drapes add a classic touch.

Try pairing old and new, like cane and wood antique seaters placed adjacent to plush sofas. Keep the colour palette neutral and layered with natural, textured fabrics. Flower arrangements can form focal points in the room and bring in pockets of colour – display them in large, brass urns or vases. Use multiple fixtures at different levels. Glass hurricanes dot the interiors, spotlights set the ambience and pendant lights accentuate details. Gallery walls of simple framed photographs and artwork can tie in the interiors.

Tall, arched windows with wood plantation shutters have been layered with soft drapes. The gabled ceiling with skylights and an antique chandelier add drama to this understated room.

Muted sofas have been paired with dark Sri Lankan seaters and centre table. Gold and brass highlights and vases of fresh flowers finish the look.

Spotlights on the beams give off ambient lightning while the low hanging drop lights accentuate the side tables. Lights aimed at the gallery wall highlight the artwork.

A sideboard with a statement mirror is a wonderful addition to a dining room. Vintage centrepieces, tall floor vases and brass table lamp pair well with the simple antique dining set.

Rooftop furniture should be minimal with neutral colours and few accessories. The in-built seater topped with comfy padding, natural wood and glass centre table and multiple pillar candles in glass holders provide the setting for romantic evenings.
