Svatma, Thanjavur

The interiors of Svatma, Thanjavur are a lesson in making wood the hero of your home

Located in the ancient town of Thanjavur, Svatma is a 38 suite, restored family mansion decorated with sleek wooden furniture, traditional Tanjore paintings and bronze artefacts.

The use of wood throughout, from beamed wooden ceilings to wood finish flooring and furniture, results in a warm and inviting ambience. In fact, wood is the hero of the interiors and is used in decorative elements such as wall panelling as well.

Highlight your traditional artworks by placing them in barren alcoves and niches, that act as a ready frame. Bland corners can also be brought to life with art. Prop an easel in a corner and place your artwork on it to bring the nook to life.

While décor rules demand minimal use of wood in the bathroom, you can bend them a bit by using wooden furniture in the dry area or in combination with the vanity, just as has been done in Svatma. We absolutely love the wooden mirror frame with intricate patterns! It’s something that can be replicated for the bedroom dresser as well.

If you’re wondering what kind of accents you can pair with dark wood furniture, look no further than bronze and gold finish artefacts such as miniature statues, candlestands and even traditional platters.

We love how the artworks are displayed in different styles: an oval painting housed in an arched alcove, a small painting propped on a wooden easel and an embroidered fabric encased in a glass frame.
Use sheer drapes to let in sunlight. Instead of artwork, you can also work with wall decals or stencilled patterns to spice up plain walls.
Add ornamental frames to your mirrors to give them a larger than life look. Keep your bathroom counter free by placing flat topped tables on either side to store your knick-knacks.
If two columns are creating an awkward space in your bedroom, consider placing an armless sofa between the two for a snug place. Old dressing tables can be easily repurposed as bedside tables while the frame of a four-poster bed can be used to create a point of interest on blank walls.
A floor lamp not only acts as a secondary light source, but also helps add some character to the room. If the space in your bedroom allows, you can create a nook for lounging by placing a low table and chairs near the window.
Pair muted linens with bright pillows to inject colour into the room. A small desk and a comfortable chair in a corner make for a great makeshift home office.
You can combine a vanity and sink in the dry area of the bathroom. Placing a small rack here can come in handy for keeping towels and even clothes.
