Traditional techniques combined with contemporary design make this a visual treat
Hidden like a jewel in the old city quarter of Jodhpur in Rajasthan is a heritage hotel like no other. At the foot of the towering Mehrangarh Fort is Raas - a boutique hotel tenderly based around an original 17-18th century Haveli. Inside the rose red walls are four original structures painstakingly restored alongside three new buildings consciously built to allow a conversation with the old. In a collaborative creation, Studio Lotus and Praxis Inc together restored, built and designed this new wonder along with over a hundred regional artisans and craftsmen.
All of the 39 guest rooms are filled with the local charm of a posh Rajput home as well as contemporary sleekness. Imagine pink sandstone, high polished black terrazzo (on floors, walls and even furniture), pops of Jodhpuri blue blended with modern day comforts and design. There’s a quiet regality that fills every corner. It shows us how to embrace traditionally Indian, or in this case traditionally Rajput elements, in a modern-day context.
Filled with locally crafted furniture in sheesham wood, the hotel has taken on a subtle colour scheme with whites and beiges. Peppering the space with vibrancy are colourful carpets, cushions and headboards. Traditional curved arches follow you to your room where they share space with minimalistic lights, straight-lined sofas and patterned tiles.
A living, breathing example of Indian design intertwined with contemporary aesthetics.
