Owl and the Pussycat, Galle

By Batul Netterwala

Decorate your home with bright colours and calico prints with inspiration from Owl and the Pussycat, Galle

Inspired by Edward Lear’s poem of the same name, Owl and the Pussycat is a quirky boutique hotel in Galle, Sri Lanka.

While the bedrooms have a modern look, they also feature handcrafted details, wood and wicker furniture and cool calico prints.

To emulate the look in your bedroom, introduce handcrafted cushions, brightly coloured rugs and even a few animal shaped pillows.

Using different shades of a colour in different rooms can make a space seem cohesive. For example, your living room can be painted in calming mint green while the bedroom can have a moss green shade.

Floral arrangements can add freshness and fragrance to any room. Don’t limit these to just the living room – introduce them in the kitchen and bathroom as well.

If you have a large balcony or patio, ensure you have plenty of comfortable seating options, ranging from swings and chairs to small cushioned stools. Recreate a balcony-like scene with French windows by placing bean bags or floor cushions near it. You can even place a wicker swing chair in a corner to create a cosy reading nook.

Display artworks with a clear glass back for a different look. Metal ornaments add a sleek modern touch. A glass topped centre table as opposed to a wooden one is easier to keep clean.
Utilise dead corners by placing a small, brightly painted storage cupboard. Inject colour into a monotone room with bright rugs or patterned throw pillows. Experiment with drapes in vivid colours to inject colour into your room.
An open-plan kitchen helps create an illusion of more space. Floating shelves add much needed storage space to your kitchen, without making it look bulky or congested.
Mirrors create the illusion of more space while plants inject some freshness. A wicker basket placed at the end of your bed can be used to store extra bedding or can double up as a laundry basket.
A deep hued feature wall can add serenity to your room. Quirky animal shaped pillows or funky artwork lend a whimsical touch. Place curtain rods closer to the ceiling to give the room a bigger appearance.
