Nira Caledonia, UK

Living room with a brown sofa

The interiors of the Nira Caledonia hotel in UK exude quiet sophistication

Located in a historical Georgian building that has earned the prestigious World Heritage Site status, Nira Caledonia is a romantic boutique hotel that oozes opulence. The former home of John Wilson, a literary figure of the early 19th century, each room in the 28-bedroom hotel is a lesson in how to blend styles, mix patterns and combine colours.

The cosy townhouse elegance is complimented by neo-classical features, chic period architecture and a striking colour palette of stylish black, cool charcoals, warm taupes and metallic accents. Contemporary touches like tall headboards that are striped, checked or solid merge well with period features like exposed floorboards, upholstered pelmets and triple-depth cornices.

A mix of bold colours and too many patterns can end up looking kitschy especially in a small room. Take a cue from their muted checked walls that don’t overpower the room, but in fact, set a soft, almost romantic tone. The furniture is understated – a light, natural-wood finish table goes really well with the country chic couch, modish armchair and understated elegance of the cabinet. To make sure that the feel of the room isn’t too staid, they have added that pop of colour with bright, floral throw pillows and a striped cushion. Another lovely décor trick we would like to use ourselves is a leather-strap trunk used as a side-table.

Solid black walls can be overpowering and make a room look smaller, but you can break the monotony with texture keeping the design simple. They make use of a simple floral pattern in black as well as crisp white on the ceiling, Georgian sash windows and detailed cornicing. Dado rails, clear-glass vases and Oriental urns, bright silk throw pillows against a tall, sleek leather headboard and a hint of metallic touch complete the look. Keep in mind that an abundance of natural light and high ceilings are paramount to achieving this sophisticated style without being stuffy.
