At this lakeside hotel, share a room with an iconic view and effortless design
In an area that loves its classical style, this hotel begs to differ. Situated on Lake Como in Italy, Il Sereno Lago di Como has 30 suites each with a terrace and view of the lake. This ultra-luxurious property has consciously moved away from the Neoclassical and faux Renaissance design that’s typical of the area.
Celebrated architect and designer Patricia Urquiola designed every last aspect of this contemporary hotel, all in an understated and elegant manner. Every piece is custom made – from the furniture, rugs and wall coverings to lamps, bathtubs and bathroom fixtures. Best part? The picture perfect lake Como and the dramatic Italian Alps are ever present as part of each room’s experience and decor.
Dark walnut wood and light grey ceppo di grè stone lay the foundation of the interiors. And modern furniture and accents designed by Studio Urquiola in earthy tones, greys, copper, blues, pinks and greys complete the space. The colour scheme of the entire hotel is greatly inspired by lake Como and the areas around it. Fresh, unpretentious and comfortable, the hotel is drenched in natural light with floor-to-ceiling windows. Transparency and openness is at the core of its design along with fuss-free furniture and modern accents.
The clean architecture of the building is inspired by the modernist Casa del Fascio located in the vicinity.

This cosy suite is designed in shades of grey and beige with wooden walls for warmth and texture.
Facing the window is a modern study table and chair with highlights of green that works well with the coppers, tans and browns in the scene. The window blinds create a beautiful play of light and shadow.
In the bathroom, the wooden wall panels pair well with the cream hued tub. The glossy green bath stool and green lounger in the background draw attention towards themselves.
A comfy grey bed is fitted with clean white and grey-blue sheets. The colour grey in the headboard, flooring and rug, along with a deep brown wood creates a contemporary setting.
