Casas na areia, Portugal

By Bindu Nair

Jan 17, 2017

This stunning resort was chosen to represent Portugal at the Venice Biennale of Architecture 2010. Find out why

At Casas na areia, the phrase ‘sand in your feet’ acquires new meaning. Sand exists where you would expect your flooring to be. Pristine white linen, sand in your toes, thatched roofs- we cannot think of another place where we would much rather be, right now. What we love about the design of Casas na areia is the sparse, almost hermit like lifestyle it endorses with its rustic appeal- away from the din of urban life. The resort has been designed by well known architect Manuel Aires Mateus, and in its opening year, it was chosen to represent Portugal at the Venice Biennale of Architecture 2010. If you are looking for ideas for your retirement home, look no further.  If you want a meditative, soothing space like Casas na areia, consider using simple linen and furnishing upholstery in white with a deep wood toned palette. The thatched roof caught our eye and gave us some decor goals for our patio space. Consider using thatched panels in your outdoor space as a space divider (whether you have a balcony, terrace or a patio) These can be easily made by local artisans who work with bamboo and cane.
