Silicone spatulas are quite popular in commercial kitchens, owing to their heat resistant quality and flexibility which also makes it a low maintenance kitchen tool. And even though traditional Indian cooking enthusiasts may cringe at the mention of a silicone spatula and go on about how the old-school metal flipper is and will always remain the best, in the this episode of ‘The Kitchen Toolkit by Beautiful Homes’, I check on this one's benefits.

To test out the product, I decided to make pancakes using one of my favourite ingredients, the Indian millet. I think pancakes are the best judge of a spatula. Be it trying to scrape the batter off the edges of a bowl to avoid wastage, or to get that clean flip in a frying pan, this spatula proved to be efficient not only to flip pancakes, but also to stir gravies and curries. The benefits of the product outweighs its cons, which is that sometimes, rubber chips off on washing.

Recipe for Millet Pancakes:

 

INGREDIENTS

  • 3–4 ripe bananas
  • 1 cup millet flour
  • a pinch of baking soda
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • ¼ tsp cinnamon powder
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp maple syrup
  • 2 tbsp Nutella


 

METHOD:

  1. In a mixing bowl, add dry ingredients like millet flour, baking powder, baking soda, and cinnamon powder. Mix them well.
  2. Now, add mashed bananas, milk, and vanilla extract, and whisk so that no lumps remain. Keep this batter aside for 10 minutes.
  3. Meanwhile, heat a pan on low heat and then grease it with some butter.
  4. Then, scoop out ⅓ cup of pancake batter and pour it onto the lightly buttered pan.
  5. Next, cook on low heat until there are small bubbles on the top and the bottom of the pancake is golden brown.
  6. Flip and cook the other side too.
  7. Finally, serve the delicious fluffy millet pancakes by stacking them over each other and topping them with some bananas, berries, or Nutella.
