BH at Salone del Mobile 2019: Four Indian brands that caused a stir in Milan

  • Ideas & Inspiration
May 09, 2019

We bring you Indian brands that became conversation starters at this annual furniture and design fair in Milan

Come April, and designers, architects, big (and little) brands, manufacturers and aficionados from all over the word descend on Milan, the epicentre of design, which puts its best foot forward to host that Mecca of furniture and design fairs, the Salone Internazionale del Mobile. Beautiful Homes too legged it to the most-visited fair in the world to soak in the mood, get a peek at the merchandise and hoof around the design capital of the world. In this first of a three-part series where we de-code what we loved there, we bring you Indian brands that stirred the air and became conversation starters at this year’s Salone.

The Jaipur Wunderkammer collection by Jaipur Rugs
Jaipur Rugs, one of India’s leading producers of handmade carpets, and Italian designer Matteo Cibic collaborated on a vibrant collection of handcrafted rugs that are inspired by Cibic’s visit to Jaipur. For this collection, the designer has imbued his aesthetic with the peculiar architecture and colours of the city, including ancient paintings and the architectonic sundial at the Pink City’s Jantar Mantar. The surreal carpets in this collection give you a peek into a new and contemporary India. Who says art can only be restricted to the walls? BH picks its favourites from the beautiful line-up.

The rug is inspired by the architectonical sundial seen at the Jantar Mantar, which was built in the 18th century. The illusion created by the play of light and shadows around the central structure of the sundial is brought to life in this rug. Priced at Rs1,06,300.

It is a contemporary take on the geometric patterns found in Rajasthani forts along with the colours of Jaipur. The rug is a window in time to the grandeur of the city’s royal days. Priced at Rs 1,00,800.

Inspired by the archetypal jharokas (a balcony with an overhang) of Jaipur, this rug mirrors the rich architectural history of the city’s ancient havelis. Priced at Rs 63,000.

Scarlet Splendour

This Kolkata-based furniture brand Scarlet Splendour has, since its inception, struck a balance between singular luxury and high design. Among the several collections launched in collaboration with renowned international designers, we love the Animagic collection by Matteo Cibic. Pushing the boundaries of shape and form, Cibic’s Animagic is a celebration of animal forms in andromorphous design. An odd mix of humour, luxury and utility, these pieces are magical, sculptural objects.
For those with more restrained tastes, there is the elegant ‘Rosa Oro’ bar designed by Nika Zupanc. Part of the 88 Secrets collection, the bar can fit into any contemporary, classical or even industrial design themes. It’s time to throw a party in just the right spirit.

The ‘Ciuco’ bar cabinet, from Matteo Cibic’s Animagic collection is available in white and gold, and has been made with plywood, brass and resin. Price is available on request.

The Laguna collection.

Jaquar World
A leading Indian company for complete bathroom solutions, the Jaquar Group recently inaugurated its international outpost in Milan. Jaquar collaborated with two international designers Matteo Thun and Antonio Rodriguez to launch the Laguna collection during the Salone week.

The Laguna collection, like much else that Jaquar does, defines refined design. High quality ceramic and slim shapes blend seamlessly to headline this collection. Faucets, accessories, showerheads and bathtubs can be composed with various metal finishes or oak and walnut wood. Versatility is the foundation for this collection and its variety of offerings can suit every mood and every taste.

Koy

Launched in 2017 by designer Kunaal Kyhaan Seolekar, the founder of interior design firm, studioHAUS, KOY offers furniture and products that lend an innovative spin to furniture, the brand’s recent international outing at the Milan design week was to launch a collection called Yantr, which is steeped with influences of Indian religion and contemporary minimalism. These art pieces have been hand-carved using rare kinds of marble handpicked from very remote parts of India. Edgy, artistic and bold are terms you would readily associate with this collection. We love the ‘Pebble’ pouffe, which can also double up as an installation. For all art-loving enthusiasts, go ahead and indulge.

The ‘Rosa Oro’ bar, by Nika Zupanc, is part of the 88 Secrets collection, and has been crafted in wood and metal. In ‘Awakening’, the Asian Paints Colour of the Year 2019. It is also available in white and black. Priced at Rs 15,13,604.
