An expert’s tips for creating a calming routine at home

  • Tips & Tricks
May 12, 2021

There is no doubt that the pandemic and lockdown in 2021 is one of the most collectively stressful situations we’ve experienced. There is a constant undercurrent of fear and anxiety every day, no matter what your daily routine might be.

At Beautifulhomes.com, our expertise is the home, and since last year, homes have taken on a multifunctional urgency, and become—literally—our entire universe. In 2021, many of us are once again restricted to our spaces, working, caring, worrying, about ourselves and our loved ones. We’ve been considering the impact of this situation on each of us and asking how we can support our mental health and create spaces of calm within the home. Whether you are a caregiver or quarantining, or just exhausted with the amount of bad news coming from all directions, there is a need to mentally distance yourself from all of it for a little while every day.

There is no doubt that the pandemic and lockdown in 2021 is one of the most collectively stressful situations we've experienced. Whether you are a caregiver or quarantining, or just exhausted with the amount of bad news coming from all directions, we definitely agree that there is a need to mentally distance yourself from all of it for a little while every day. With this in mind, and May being the Mental Health Awareness month, we spoke to Aditi Surana- a Mumbai-based graphologist and high-performance coach who shared some simple ideas on handling the anxiety and uncertainty of lockdown life with us.

With this in mind, and May being the Mental Health Awareness month, we decided to speak to Aditi Surana who is a Mumbai-based graphologist and high-performance coach. She shares with us some simple ideas on handling the anxiety and uncertainty of lockdown life. Edited excerpts from an interview:

BH: Aditi, please tell us about your work.
Aditi:
I use personality and behavior to tell individuals what is causing them stress in their lives, what makes people have that gloomy feeling, the anxiety and where do all the physical symptoms of anxiety come from. Once we study that we start giving very simple, everyday tools for people to go beyond it. That’s my work for the last 17 years.

BH: Recently, what are people telling you that is bothering them most this time in lockdown?
Aditi:
Last two months things have gotten much worse. I have never seen people be hopeless to this point. I am not only talking about people who are struggling financially but also just everyone who is coming across the news and the overwhelming stories related to Covid. People have to constantly fight their urge to fall into the pit of despair that’s been created every day.

BH: Since there is nowhere to go, how could we make our homes a safe space to disconnect from all the despair around?
Aditi:
Doesn’t matter what the size of your house is, we can create even a corner that feels calming. That relationship has to be cultivated. I suggest you pick one activity, journaling or meditating or even just have your morning coffee. Pick a place to do these grounding exercises in that one spot every day. Everything we interact with on a daily basis becomes part of our mentality and our attitude. So, if you have some aspects of your life that have inspired you, get some memories of that into that space. I could even include pictures of people you admire.

BH: You also teach Graphotherapy as a practice to deal with anxiety. What is it exactly?
Aditi:
Graphotherapy is about using a specific formation of handwriting and repeating that with coordinated breathing. I call it handwriting yoga, because the specific breathing and movement induces calmness. It seems simple but so many who have tried it have seen the benefits. We call this Calmasutra and it gives you a sense of connecting with your body with the help of micro-movement like handwriting. It’s simple and can be learned in five steps.

BH: Where can people find more details about this?
Aditi:
We are doing a 21-day anti-anxiety workshop as a social initiative. Anybody who wants to learn this can get all the details and resources on my website (hyperlink: www.aditisurana.com), which will be available even after the 21-day period.
