9 movies perfect for the holiday season

  • Tips & Tricks
Dec 09, 2018

From thrillers and romance to deliciously cheesy, here are some of our seasonal favourites

You know its holiday season when there’s a discernible nip in the air and you have a hankering for cheery holiday flicks. Reach for the hot chocolate and cookies as you settle in with our picks of feel-good films and thrillers to ring in the Christmas season:

9.    Meet Me in St. Louis (1944)
This wonderful musical starring the inimitable Judy Garland and her unforgettable rendition of “Have yourself a merry little Christmas’ has something for everyone. It’s sweet, upbeat and perfect for the season.

8.    Polar Express (2004)
Friendship, courage and the spirit of the holidays, this is one unforgettable journey we’re happy to take this time of the year.

7.    While You Were Sleeping (1995)
Romance, great casting and quirky comedy as only Sandra Bullock can pull it off - there’s a special place for this family drama around the year-end.

6.    The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
Well ahead of its time, this Tim Burton produced film has all the makings of a Christmas favourite. His special brand of fantasy, whimsy and characters you’ll fall in love with over and over again - what more can you ask for?

5.    Serendipity (2001)
Do you believe in love at first sight or destiny? It really doesn’t matter because the on-screen chemistry between Kate Beckinsale and John Cusack sandwiched between its holiday-happy messaging makes this flick a beautifully sweet treat, we’re happy to repeat.

Hot chocolate, friends and a feel-good film is how we like to spend our evenings home during the holiday season.

4.    Die Hard (1988)
An offbeat choice perhaps but Christmas isn’t quite complete without this thriller. Complete with all the trappings of the season - holiday soundtrack, a Christmas party, weary travellers and even its own version of the villainous Grinch - there’s enough to keep you glued to the screen.

3.    The Santa Claus (1994)
In his holiday heart warmer, Tim Allen plays the guy who accidentally kills Santa (boo!) and finds himself automatically recruited in his place. All's well that ends well with this rib-tickling howler that subsequently spawned not one but two sequels.

2.    Love Actually (2003)
Love it or hate it, this wholly eccentric holiday film centres on the lives of eight lovestruck Londoners. Love, loss and a tune that’s a complete earworm makes this a wild emotional roller-coaster ride worth taking at least once around the holidays.

1.    Home Alone (1990)
Action, comedy, ‘sticky bandits’ and more bratty antics than you can dream of, courtesy eight-year-old Kevin McCallister make this a must have on any Christmas watch list. With four sequels to boast, our forever favourite will always the very first film. Look out, here comes the paint can!
