Here’s how you can upcycle your empty home delivery boxes

Post all the online retail therapy, especially during the lockdown, we have been left with a ton of cardboard boxes to get rid of. This material in particular can be recycled, thankfully! But taking it all to a recycling unit isn’t the most feasible idea at this point. Plus, the local Raddi-wala may not be available. So if you are feeling a pang of environmental guilt at the piled up boxes, here’s the next best solution. Upcycling!

Our guest DIY stylist Andrew Fernandes, reconstructs regular cardboard boxes into three interesting new products. With his expertise in art and craft, he has come up with ideas for us that not only look great but are also useful. Plus, they are super easy and so much fun to do, so get your kids to join in. All you need is your basic craft kit, i.e some paints, brushes, sketch pens, scissors and glue. Don’t forget to put your artistic cap on!

Post all the online retail therapy, especially during the lockdown, we have been left with a ton of cardboard boxes to get rid of. This material in particular can be recycled, thankfully! But taking it all to a recycling unit isn’t the most feasible idea at this point. So if you are feeling a pang of environmental guilt at the piled up boxes, here’s the next best solution. Upcycling!

Here’s how you can do these:

Cute Cacti:

  1. Grab the thinnest cardboard box you have. Preferably a cereal box.
  2. Next, draw small sized cacti on it and cut them in that shape.
  3. Then paint these with a base of green and let them dry out.
  4. Once done, use sketch pens or paint to further decorate them. You could also draw a smiley face for a happy effect.
  5. Put these in tiny bowls or simply stick them up as wall décor.

You now have an adorable looking piece of décor and one less cereal box!

Storage Box:

  1. Take any cardboard box and separate its flaps.
  2. Draw geometric shapes on the flaps and then cut them out.
  3. Next, paint these cutouts, in various colours. You could use a colour scheme too!
  4. While the cutouts dry, paint the box we kept aside and let it dry too.
  5. Once done, paste these geometric shapes on the box, leaving enough space in between each.
  6. Using sketch pens, draw symbols around these cut outs for some fun.

Another carton down and a fancy storage box good to go!

  1. Choose a box whose cardboard has a thickness of ½ cm.
  2. Next, cut 2 squares in the measurement of 9x9 cm.
  3. Then cut a rectangle measuring 4.5x9cm.
  4. Cut another square in 9x9cm. Further, cut a half cm strip from the top of this cutout.
  5. Then cut two more squares of 9x9cm each. Take the top right corner of each and cut out squares measuring 4cmx4cm.
  6. Now glue everything together. The squares form a ‘L’. The shapes with the corners cut out, go on the sides. The square with the top strip cut out goes in the center and the rectangle goes in front.
  7. Next paint these in fun colours and let it dry.

Now you have a pretty desk organizer. A perfect addition for the work from home days!
