For a home renovation project of a villa in Chennai, the Beautiful Homes Service team created a soothing all-white space
A two-storey, four-bedroom villa in Kovilampakkam in Chennai in need of renovation found an able collaborator in the Beautiful Homes Service. Designer Jennisha Sharon and her team were tasked with creating a tranquil, understated space that was light on décor, high on natural light and expressed comfort and warmth in subtle design and neutral shades. Sharon speaks to Beautiful Homes about how she went about achieving it—and the hiccups that were effortlessly countered.
Jennisha Sharon (JS): The house, which was a two-storey, four-bedroom villa, was complex with an old architectural layout. It was a renovation project and when we first visited the site, it was in the civil stages of work.
JS: The client didn’t want any complicated patterns or designs. He wanted a classy design with light colours and a space that maximised natural light. He wanted optimum utilisation of the space but without looking like too many units or elements were used inside a room. Given these requirements, we followed an ‘inside out’ concept, used subtle colour combinations and created a space with a soothing vibe.
JS: We played with shapes, using a triangular structure in many units, to provide an element of uniqueness.
The living room area of the two-storey villa in Chennai is all-white in keeping with the client brief of using light colours throughout the house.
JS: This was a really huge villa we had to work on and initially, the client’s budget didn’t match the requirement and the size of the space. But after some back and forth, and seeing the commitment on part of the Beautiful Homes Service team and the effort put into the initial design proposal, the client was impressed and went on to confirm the project. So after a final round of discussions with the team and streamlining the scope and budget, we went ahead.
The girls’ room is the result of combining two rooms into a single space.
JS: The daughters’ bedroom, since it was two rooms that had been combined into a single bedroom. The space of the room was distorted and the elements to capture were huge. Both the girls’ had differing ideas about what they wanted, so it was challenging to merge their idea into one single concept.
JS: The console table and the double-height ceiling. At the execution stage, we realised that the console table did not match the design shared. So, the execution team (Akhil Antony and RA Raghuraman) carefully dismantled the structure and converted it into a coffee table on spot. The client, too, was very pleased with that.
JS: To start, the client was a bit worried whether the deadlines would be met because of the Chennai floods causing a delay. But we did finish the project on time and according to the client’s expectations while maintaining quality. The client has been satisfied and pleased with the entire process, the work carried out by each team and the level of coordination across teams.
