Bindu Joseph’s home in Kerala is a mix of traditional and contemporary elements

With its many tastefully done corners, décor blogger Bindu Joseph’s home is like a striking vignette of beautiful décor ideas

Joseph channels the laid-back, casual vibe intrinsic to the coastal state rather well in her home, which she shares with her husband and three kids. A mix of modern and traditional elements defines the décor of her home. What used to earlier be compartmentalised into various rooms were broken down to create a more, light-filled, large living room.

A heavily carved pillar frames the beam and column while it is contrasted by contemporary furniture.

A wooden partition separates the living room from the family area. An antique mirror along with a console on one side and accessories on the other uplifts what could have been a staid room divider.

The entertainment area is decorated with framed African cloth gifted by her sister from Cape Town, wall plates from Sri Lanka, Venetian mask and the chinoiserie, lacquered wall plate from Malaysia.

One could learn a trick or two from the many vignettes Joseph has created in the corners of her home. Here, bespoke furniture sits in warm familiarity with décor finds from big-ticket retailers. We love how she’s managed to separate the living from the family area by simply dressing up the wooden partition with an antique mirror and console. You know you are in a décor enthusiast’s home, when even the kitchen (which is mostly neglected when it comes to décor) sees personal flourishes.

Most spaces in the home see a natural variation depending on what they are catering to. “The decor of my home keeps changing,” says Joseph, “I don't like to stick to a kind of theme; I love mixing styles. My house is my reflection of the mood I am in,” she signs off.

Bindu Joseph’s living room is a mix of traditional and modern elements sitting in complete harmony with each other.
An antique chest of drawers with an elegant table lamp creates an interesting corner.
The dining room has minimum furnishings, which allows the heavily carved dining table and console to shine through.
The sparsely done up bedroom comes alive with oversized posters used as art. Also, full marks to the wooden ceiling.
The bedroom channels the beach vibe with its light grey walls, white picture frames and oversized mirror above the bed.
You can dress up even your kitchen with some quirky décor accents with inspiration from this kitchen in Bindu Joseph’s home.
As with most corners in the home, Bindu Joseph works with different levels for accents thereby creating movement. She has played with different materials and textures like beaten metal, woven jute and carved wood to create an interesting palette.
