A 40 year old, 5,000 sqft bungalow in Pune gets a contemporary makeover

Eclectic art and accessories add a warm, cosy vibe to this all white space

Priyanka Pradeep and Piyush Mehra of Mumbai based PS Design are known for their work on Bollywood celebrity homes, including the homes of Sushant Singh Rajput, Kriti Sanon, and industrialists like Lakshmi Mittal among others. While one may be tempted to think that much like the larger than life sets, these homes would be about showmanship, the duo have managed to keep it real and rooted through their design. And one of the projects that caught our eye was this 40 year old bungalow in Pune, which was completely rehauled.

A minimalistic, all-white facade enriched with wooden cladding, and silver travertine on the compound with aluminum lettering welcomes you in. “The design was a challenge as the original bungalow had small windows and closed spaces,” says Priyanka. The first thing they did was break down 90 percent of the walls and do away with enclosed spaces. Instead they worked on a plan that allowed the space to transform into this modern, open and user-friendly home.

One of the most striking features is the entry door, which unlike most stretches to a width of six ft. The foyer has a window that opens out to the front.

The double-height ceiling continues throughout the space which brings in ample light and aids air circulation in the home.

This leads to a light and airy double-heighted elegant living room. You can’t help but notice the oversized punctures throughout the home, be it the doors or the windows. Twelve ft tall windows look out into the manicured garden, which allows a seamless integration of the indoors and the outdoors.

The double-height continues well into the dining and kitchen. A predominantly white scheme interspersed with colours defines the interiors, while an eclectic mix of furniture, artwork and accessories complete the contemporary look.

The master bedroom is converted into a suite by combining two bedrooms and bathrooms. Not to mention the luxurious walk in closet, a study room and a huge bathroom. The den with its circular ceiling is the cosiest space in the home with comfortable seating and a wide screen along with a library.

And for those lovely winter afternoons, the terrace is a retreat with sleeper-wood strips to add a little privacy. This home is indeed a sanctuary, filled with light and plenty of greenery.

The living room is done up in shades of white and beige while art lends colour to the setting.
The den is a cosy space with a circular false ceiling that allows for mood lighting.
A sleeper wood partition in the outdoor section barricades it from the world outside thereby allowing for privacy.
We love how the concrete finish bathroom exudes a glamorous appeal.
