Breach Candy Home – Beautiful Homes

Ashish Bhagalia of Vista Architects merges subtlety with colours in this home executed by the end-to-end services of Asian Paints

In the heart of bustling Mumbai, where the city's relentless energy meets the tranquil embrace of the Arabian Sea, lies a two-bedroom home renovated by Ashish Bhagalia, Principal Architect and Co-Founder of Vista Architects. The client's vision was clear from the outset—to create a space that is simple yet elegant. Hence, the defining characteristic of this 1,050 sq ft home is its captivating palette of blues, whites, and browns, set against a muted backdrop.

With a stunning sea-facing view, the location itself served as a source of inspiration for the design. It breathes life into the space, infusing it with character and vitality. We spoke to the designer to understand how the owners’ brief and their design sensibility came together to craft this space. Edited excerpts from the interview:

Nestled in the heart of Mumbai in Breach Candy, where the bustle of the city meets the serene Arabian Sea, sits a 1050 sq. ft. two-bedroom home by Ashish Bhagalia, Principal Architect of Vista Architects.

Beautiful Homes: What was the project brief you received from the client?

Ashish Bhagalia: The owner of the apartment is an energetic couple who were bent on having a luxurious home with oceanic elements and modern designs. With this brief and location, we were focused on building an apartment that would maximise the views of the ocean and is inherently inspired by its surroundings.

BH: How did you introduce colours and patterns to the neutral backdrop?

AB: We have used the monochromatic backdrop in the living area, and we have used an oceanic blue and gold in the dining area and bar which is adjacent to the living area. We tried to play with different patterns and subtle tones to keep the look of the house and tried to amalgamate their concepts and our ideas together.

BH: What are a few stand-out features of the home for you?

AB: The standout feature is definitely the space creation and space planning for this client and home as per the brief. Carving out large windows, creating a large sitting area, an oceanic theme bar and a dining area stood out from the rest of the house.

The blue chairs in the dining room add a pop of colour to the space.

BH: Where and how did you incorporate an oceanic essence in the house?

AB: Large windows frame sweeping ocean vistas with the gentle sound of the waves and sea breeze. The colour palette takes cues from the seashore, sandy neutrals, ocean blues, and sun-kissed golds. We have kept the bedrooms cosy and simple with botanical wallpaper on feature walls for a sense of drama along with statement furniture pieces to add sophistication to each room.

BH: Tell us a bit about the process of working with Asian Paints. What type of Asian Paints products were used in this project?

AB: Asian paints have handled the execution and supervision of this project from end to end, based on the designs rolled out by Vista Architects. All the detailed specifications and selection of colours and tiles would not have been possible without the Asian Paints team. We have used lights from The White Teak Company, wallpapers from Nilaya and kitchen setup from Sleek.

BH: Can you elaborate on the thought behind the design of the daughter’s room?

AB: The owner's daughter was very clear in her design brief about a vibrant bedroom with the use of newer colours and mirrors. Hence, we incorporated these elements in our design by putting a large mirror on the wardrobe, vibrant colours on her study unit and a floral watercolour effect wallpaper on the bed’s back wall. The bedside light became the focal point of the bedroom.

BH: Any words of advice for someone signing up for the Beautiful Homes Service?

AB: Beautiful Homes Service is a line of services by Asian paints and that says it all, if you are looking for professionals to help you build your home, this is the right choice for you. The team is typically led by a designer, site supervisors, project manager and the contracting team. They keep you updated about the project’s progress on a weekly basis, which is perfect for the whole working community.
