Gaurav Kapur and Kirat Bhattal’s elegant Mumbai home interior design

Gaurav Kapur is a familiar face to many – the multi-hyphenate (VJ, sports host, game show host and producer) has been a fixture on our TV screens for years. His wife, actress and anchor Kirat Bhattal is no stranger to the camera either. (You would have seen her on Life Mein Ek Baar and Fox Traveller’s Style and the City.)

Since the couple live an extremely busy life, their three-bedroom apartment with a private terrace is done up in a minimal style to be as calm and serene as possible. “There’s a lot of noise and colour and people in my life so we kept things neutral, tasteful but not ostentatious. The space should not overwhelm you,” says Gaurav. Art punctuates the drawing and dining area, but only a few chosen pieces: clutter is a complete no-no for the couple, which is somewhat of a rarity in a city like Mumbai. “Gaurav works really hard. But ever since we moved in here he says the only thing he looks forward to is coming back home, which I think is amazing,” smiles Kirat.

So, of course, they have extremely busy schedules, and little time to wind down on a regular basis. And what time they do get to spend in their home, they prefer to mute the outside world. Their three-bedroom apartment with a private terrace is done up in a minimal style to be as calm and serene as possible. “There’s a lot of noise and colour and people in my life so we kept things neutral, tasteful but not ostentatious. The space should not overwhelm you,” says Gaurav.

Like A Sanctuary

What strikes you when you walk in is the sheer expanse: the home is sparse and chic, with elegant furniture that is beautiful and functional but not bulky. As Gaurav pointed out, the colour palette is largely neutral, with the walls, drapes and furniture done in shades of white and beige. Art punctuates the drawing and dining area, but only a few chosen pieces: clutter is a complete no-no for the couple, which is somewhat of a rarity in a city like Mumbai where people try to cram as much as they can into small apartments.

The one thing they do enjoy collecting are knick-knacks from their travels. They lend personality to the home without taking up too much space. “Every time we travel we like to bring back something  for the house,” says Kirat. “It doesn’t have to be big…it could be a magnet, it could be a mask or a rug…just memories and mementos from when we travel.”

The couple made a conscious decision to keep the interiors neutral and minimal, with pops of colour in the form of art and cushions.

Mixed Taste
The den (or TV room as Kirat prefers to call it) is a cosy room with a standout royal blue L-shaped couch. Largely a space to relax, watch TV and play video games, it also doubles up as Gaurav’s office when he works from home. Their book collection is on display on a shelf above the desk – and is a reflection of their personalities - sci-fi and spirituality (Kirat), autobiographies and sports (Gaurav).

The couple also keeps their home breezy and vibrant with plants. Their balcony garden is where they unwind in the evenings with a cup of tea and a view of the sunset. “We spent a lot of time getting the right plants for the house,” says Kirat.

“I like a lot of natural light, and so we agreed on this space pretty much instantly,” adds Gaurav. In fact, there are several nooks in their home where they catch the sun – the den, Gaurav’s favourite chair in the living room and another beautiful seat by the window in the master bedroom.

The master bedroom is a spacious affair – they combined two rooms into a large one to ensure maximum wardrobe space. “The first house we lived in, it was really cute. I actually renovated and built it as a house for one, which meant there were not too many cupboards and that was a problem for Kirat,” says Gaurav. Their new set-up has a separate cupboard just for shoes and plenty of space for everything else. The masterpiece of the room, though, is a beautiful four poster bed, something Kirat had her heart set on. Funny story: Gaurav doesn’t fit on it, but he’s learned to adjust and sleep curled up! “Gaurav works really hard. But ever since we moved in here he says the only thing he looks forward to is coming back home, which I think is amazing,” smiles Kirat.
