Wash basin dimensions: A guide to choosing the right size
While there are no hard and fast rules for bathroom wash basin sizes, most sinks do fall into a standard range of dimensions. Keep these in mind to find the perfect wash basin for your bathroom design!
Figuring out the right washbasin measurements for your bathroom can be a little complicated. Much of the time, for bathroom wash basin dimensions you need to first consider the shape and type of sink before you can understand the wash basin dimensions that manufacturers provide. Many product descriptions – particularly for undermount, vessel and drop-in sinks – take available washing space as the most important part of wash basin size, only giving you the inside dimension. While, with wall-hung and pedestal sinks, the outside dimensions are usually indicated, giving you a better idea of basin size for bathroom space available.
With this handy guide, you’ll gain some insight into these standard wash basin dimensions. So, when doing up your bathroom, wash basin size will no longer seem so confusing!
How to Measure Wash Basin Size
- Length: this bathroom basin size is measured parallel to the back wall.
- Width: take the distance that runs perpendicular to the back wall for these washbasin measurements.
- Height: wash basin height standard is measured on the outside of the sink from top to bottom.
- Depth: the distance from the overflow hole to the drain opening is how wash basin standard size is taken. If there’s no overflow, depth is measured from the top of the rim to the drain opening.
The Standard Wash Basin Dimensions:

- Small: 15” - 20” length, 9” - 12” width & 5¾” - 7” depth are common wash basin small size measurements.
- Medium: 20” - 30” length, 19” - 24” width & about 7” depth is the wash basin standard size range.

With an oval sink, wash basin dimensions take length as the longer axis and width as the shorter one. If a product description mentions diameter, that will refer to the length and width.
Round Wash Basin Dimensions
- Small: 7” - 10” in diameter is the wash basin minimum size for round sinks.
- Medium: 11” - 15” in diameter is the most common bathroom wash basin size range.
- Large: 16” - 20” in diameter is standard wash basin dimensions.
For most round wash basin dimensions, depth will vary from 5” - 8”.
Wall-Mount Wash Basin Dimensions
While bathroom wash basin size for wall-mount sinks can vary a lot, length is typically 16” - 23”, with 15” - 18” width and 5” - 8” depth being the more common bathroom basin size ranges. Rectangular and square ones may have a shallower wash basin minimum size and run 15” - 25” long & 16” - 20” “wide.
Pedestal Wash Basin Dimensions
Remember that pedestal wash basin dimensions are outside dimensions. While the classic length is between 22” & 28”, these days length usually varies from 15½” - 30”. Wash basin size for width can also vary, but is usually between 17” and 20”. As for wash basin height standard, this is usually 29” - 34” tall.

When considering your washbasin measurements always remember to ensure that basin dimension and style are a match for your chosen faucet designs. Whether dual faucets or a single ‘mixing’ tap, other than wash basin size, plumbing requirements are equally important.

- Perfect bathroom wash basin size should account for bathroom layout and dimensions as well as your use of the sink.
- For top-mount or undermount sinks, keep about 2” of space from the front of the countertop to the front of the sink, and about the same between the back of the sink and the backsplash. Your faucet design may impact washbasin measurements.
- The framework of your vanity is more likely to constrain your bathroom basin size than the space you need along the length of the countertop.
- If you want a big size wash basin on a small countertop, try a vessel sink and wall-mount faucet so the sink rim can extend across the width of the countertop.
- To choose the ideal pedestal or wall-mount basin size for bathroom layouts that are smaller, try to keep at least 21” from the front of the sink to the facing wall and 30” from the centerline of the sink to the centerline of any adjacent fixture.
