This is how we do wall storage—and so much more

Neha Dhupia’s home for decorating a dead space

Actors Neha Dhupia and Angad Bedi’s home is a well of inspiration for the Beautiful Homes Service designers

Actors Neha Dhupia and Angad Bedi’s apartment as seen on the Asian Paints Where the Heart Is episode is an eye-catching study in white, overlaid with pretty colours and a laidback vibe. In a space teeming with inspirational elements, what caught the eyes of the design team was a clever and interesting storage space set up against one wall. It certainly didn’t detract from the rest of the house; rather, it fit so well with the aesthetic that it prompted some thinking about how dead corners in homes can be brought to life.

The Inspiration

Think about it: there is a blank wall space that isn’t doing much and it occurs to you as you walk past, that maybe it should be put to work. You think of adding a cupboard or a cabinet for storage and while that’s a great idea, it can be so much more! This is where an innocuous wall in Dhupia and Bedi’s home provided the context and an idea. They had used this wall space by adding storage with distressed finish. Storage, after all, doesn’t just have to be functional; it can be aesthetic as well. The design team brainstormed on how versatile storage can be and they way it can add life into dead spaces.

It takes a certain kind of perspective to focus on that one, rather unobtrusive part in a home that has several other, more obvious high points. Actors Neha Dhupia and Angad Bedi’s apartment is an eye-catching study in white, overlaid with pretty colours and a tranquil, laid-back vibe. In a space teeming with inspirational elements, what caught the eyes of the design team was a clever and interesting storage space set up against one wall. It certainly didn’t detract from the rest of the house; rather, it fits so well with the aesthetic that it prompted some thinking about how dead corners in homes can be brought to life.

The Visualisation

Given that the inspiration was focused narrowly on a wall in the Neha Dhupia-Angad Bedi home, the visualisation process was easy with the 3D visualiser. A word of advice? Even if the space you want is small and your source of inspiration pretty well-defined, do not forgo mood-boarding (or 3D visualising if you can get help with a visualiser). It always helps.

The Render

The idea was to make this space look vibrant and comfortable, an unexpected sanctuary, while also serving the purpose of storage. The cool blue for the wall was narrowed down to get that vibe into this corner and to offset the colour of the shelving unit that was inspired by the original. The decision to scatter potted plants all around was to ensure that the space got the touch of green but didn’t crowd around the floor and take up space. The artwork adds an aesthetic touch to what is essentially meant to be all about function.

The Final Outcome

The wall, which was really just a walk-through kind of wall that you would otherwise ignore, became a backdrop for a big storage unit with seating. The distressed-finished shelving unit had a combination of partly open and partly closed cabinets, which allowed it to also be used as a display space. Since the idea was to breathe life into dead spaces, the designers used these open shelves to add indoor plants and creepers. An oval mirror was added in the corner as an element of interest and to make the space seem bigger. Colour played an important role here, with a green wall and two shades of blue making this space look vibrant.
