As Christmas and New Year’s Eve roll around, use these lighting hacks to ace your terrace party home interior deign
Lighting plays a beautiful role in bringing together the décor for an outdoor party. Done right, it can set the perfect mood for those dusk gatherings. You need the lightning to be both beautiful and functional so try layering different light sources and stick to soft, warm light.
Candles and kerosene lamps
One way to light your outdoor table setting is with candles or kerosene lamps. Place a few pillar candles of varying heights in a large glass hurricane and fill it with a couple of inches of sand, pebbles, etc. You can also set lamps on the floor or hang them up at strategic points.
DIY lamps
Fill a few glass bottles – apothecary bottles look great – with lamp oil. Attach wicks to the corks and you’ve got easy oil lamps that can be placed in glass hurricanes. Mason jars also work well; add a little colour to the oil before pouring to make it look extra festive.
Garden Torches
Place garden torches around the perimeter of the terrace for warm ambient lighting. Get your hands-on oil-filled torches that are attachable to railings, deck or table mounted or even spiked versions that can be placed in planters.
Solar powered lights
There are a lot of options when it comes to solar powered outdoor lighting. You can also find box lights and LED wall lamps, candles and fairy lights, as well as hurricanes and spotlights that are solar powered. You can choose from white, yellow light and colour changing versions.
Battery operated lights
Try battery-operated string lights and lanterns which can be placed anywhere – wrapped around bamboo shoots or a trellis, placed on the table bunched into glass hurricanes or large mason jars, or strung up above to create a canopy.
Fireplaces and pots
Use portable, bio-ethanol tabletop fireplaces and fire pots that can be placed anywhere.
