Sravanthi Koduru’s home fuses traditional elements and modern functionality

Sravanthi Koduru’s Hyderabad home

Reimagined by Mumbai based architect Sandesh Prabhu, Sravanthi’s 40 year old home gets a new lease on life with traditional prints, antique furniture and rustic accessories – all with a chic, modern twist

At first glance, you’d never be able to guess that Sravanthi Koduru’s house, sitting in a lush, landscaped plot of 20,000 sq. ft in Hyderabad is around 40 years old. This is in large part due to the French doors, which envelope the living areas of this 8,500 sq. ft house, imbuing the entire structure with a uniquely modern edge. In fact, this was the first of many changes that the Mumbai-based architect, Sandesh Prabhu, made to the house. “There was hardly any light coming in through the smaller windows that were built previously. To let the natural light in and to merge the interiors with the outdoors, we had to fit in big glass doors,” recalls Prabhu.

The lower level of the house is enveloped by a series of French windows that merges the indoors with the outdoors, offering views of the lush greenery outside. Several rooms have bright popping colours, which Sandesh says reflect Sravanthi’s cheerful and friendly personality.

Open Spaces And Friendship

In a city where open spaces are a rare occurrence, Prabhu wanted to take full advantage of the verdant landscape surrounding the house. He wanted the four occupants – Koduru, her husband and their two kids – to enjoy the greenery, so he ensured all the bedrooms opened up onto the balcony. Consequently, the L-shaped balcony running around the first floor was sectioned off to give everyone private access from their own room. The home also has many spaces which were created purely with the intention of being used for entertaining. Consequently, Koduru’s home has become somewhat of a social hub.

The living and dining area are separated by a heavy wooden trunk that also doubles up as the sideboard. Notice how the walls too have different colours to break up the space – while the living room has blue, the kitchen is painted in pure white.

Cushions, rugs, accessories and throws have been effectively used to bring in pops of colour in this space. Several artworks dot the walls in Sravanthi’s house – some serve to highlight the space, others break the monotony of solid-coloured walls while the others are used to bring in a spot of colour.

Framed photographs and artworks line the corridor walls. Of the six bedrooms, five are located on the first floor of the house, master bedroom included. Pops of colour are introduced through soft furnishings throughout the house.

Fusing Nostalgia And Contemporary Design

This is the house Koduru grew up in, and hence she has an incredibly strong attachment to it. While having a vast trove of memories associated with each room, she wanted to make sure it stayed modern and fresh. The inspiration for this came from Turiya Villa, a Goan property developed by Prabhu. This can be observed in the use of bright colour; splashes of yellow in the bathroom, a turquoise staircase and Moulin Rouge-esque pink in the living room. All of these intoxicating shades breathe life into the home, while antiques placed in most of the corners and atop of mantels remind Koduru of her roots. The idea was to retain the soul of the house and so Prabhu used chettinad flooring and IPS throughout the six-bedroom house.

Having met Sravanthi, it’s clear that the house is a reflection of her personality – open, warm, friendly and inviting. So much so that her home has now become an oasis for her friends and the primary venue of her book reading club!

Sravanthi’s house has now become the hangout spot for her friends and we can totally understand why. With an outdoor space such as this, entertaining must be a breeze. We love the pop of pink on the wall. The jali like screen provides enough privacy without creating a boxed in feeling.
A striking carved wooden door welcomes you to Sravanthi’s house. Take a cue from her minimal entryway to organise your own – a sleek console, large mirror and rug to demarcate the space are all the elements you need.
This wooden dining table was specially crafted by Sandesh. An authentic feel is brought in by using beaten brass utensils – not just for show but for use as well. The centrally placed mirror creates the illusion of a bigger space.
The double heighted ceiling is decorated with an ornate chandelier that doesn’t overpower the space. Don’t be surprised to find traditional pieces like this cupboard in the house – these were specially crafted by Sandesh to fit in Sravanthi’s brief of retaining the old-world soul of the house.
Architect Sandesh Prabhu wanted Sravathi and her family to enjoy the serene views of the estate the house was located in. So, he opened up the house by constructing several windows that would ensure the home was filled with sunlight. If you too have a room with a view, French windows are your best friend.
If there was any specific request from Sravanthi, it was that she wanted a modern kitchen. This concrete-finish island kitchen, complete with floating shelves, a dining corner and storage cabinet more than meets her needs – be it cooking for her family or when playing host.
