In Neena and Masaba Gupta’s home nothing is incidental. From the choice of location close to the beach, the images and artworks on the wall to the awards lined up on the console, everything is chosen to make the house personal and real. While everyone knows actor Neena Gupta from her movies and TV serials, Masaba is a fashion favourite known for her statement prints and colours that were a breath of fresh air for the Indian runways. Their public identities line the walls of the entrance corridor of their Juhu home in Mumbai; the passage is a visual narrative of photographs, framed awards and movie posters. But if you imagine Masaba’s home to be bold and bright like her fashion collections, it will take you by surprise.
“Luckily both of us have a similar taste in interiors,” smiles Neena. That mostly translates into clean and effortless comfort. The wash of white in the spacious living room is freckled with a few signature art pieces and colourful cushions—it’s fun trying to guess which one was picked by whom. The sofas are large and plush perfect for sinking in with a book. “Both of us have our designated favourite spots on the sofa that we don’t even allow guests to use,” smiles Masaba. Although for her, the focus of the house is the view from the balcony window. The soft palms and the scent of the sea—which is less than a minute away—feel like a part of the living room tableau, bringing the outdoors in.

furniture pieces, the mother and daughter often trek down to the antique market in Oshiwara to handpick artefacts and old furniture. One such piece is an antique doorframe, set against a wall of their otherwise unadorned living room. Even the wardrobe in Neena’s bedroom has been with her for years, part of two other homes she lived in before this. Then there are pieces that hold emotional value for Neena – a long paint brush gifted by M F Hussain, a carved wall décor piece gifted by filmmaker Shyam Benegal, and the first expensive painting she ever bought from Lalita Lajmi, artist and mother of filmmaker Kalpana Lajmi.

The dressing room, is what actually reveals their love for colour and the arc lights. A green door, replicated from a piece the duo came across on their travels, leads into the room, where the palette is bolder than the rest of the home. An open closet shows off rows of patterned fabrics, and a wall organiser shows off rows of glittering bangles from Neena’s collection. At the far end of the room, wooden shutters frame a leafy, planter-lined balcony—during the day, warm light filters through soft, sheer white curtains. The antique chandelier is one of the rare lighting objects in the house—a flourish of glam for the room where they get ready for the red carpet.
Neena and Masaba engage with their space in their own way—shifting furniture around every few months but with an uncanny knack of making every element feel like it’s in just the right spot. “When I think about it today, this house has brought me a sense of contentment and that is the most important thing for me,” says Neena.
