India is a country of extreme climates, where most cities face brutally hot summers, harsh winters, turbulent monsoons and humidity, along with immense amounts of dust through the year. Since our homes are meant to withstand and combat this, we have to choose our décor accordingly and wisely.

While you can style your home in an infinite number of ways to echo your personal style and preferences, it’s wiser to consider the simplest most pared down way to go about this. The easiest place to start this is in the room you probably live in the most—the bedroom. For the most unique simple bedroom designs, we’ve rounded up a list of ideas and sources of inspiration that can work in every Indian home.

1. AN UNINTERRUPTED SOURCE OF NATURAL LIGHT IS THE STARTING POINT OF A SIMPLE BEDROOM DESIGN

Besides being stylish and chic, a simple bedroom design is one that is open, airy and devoid of any clutter. Having a natural source of light and ventilation is the first and simplest step to creating a bedroom that’s warm and welcoming. Since most Indian homes get ample sun throughout the year, this is an easy feature to highlight in any room. Avoid obstructing the entirety of any windows or doors in a room, making sure that the façade (except the frame) is made of clear glass. This will allow the room to be seeped in light through the day.

STYLE TIP: If you’re looking to place furniture around a window, a

comfy armchair and ottoman are clever pieces to incorporate here. This will create a cosy and well-lit reading nook in the room with infinite views of the outdoors.

2. A HIGH BED IS THE PERFECT STATEMENT PIECE IN A SIMPLE BEDROOM INTERIOR DESIGN

Older pieces of furniture such as a high four-poster bed are not only more valuable and sturdy, but also usually easier to maintain. With it’s added height, a four-poster bed is also more convenient to clean around and under. Since dust is a perennial problem that plagues every room in all homes, this is a simple yet well designed furniture piece that will be high on style and functionality.

EXPERT TIP: For all simple bedroom designs, pick one piece of furniture and make it stand out to create a style statement in the room. For the rest of the interiors, keep designs minimal or pair them with the colours and textures on this focal point in the room.

3. A VIBRANT WALLPAPER CAN DOUBLE AS ART IN A SIMPLE BEDROOM DESIGN

In most Indian homes, placing art in the bedroom can be a tricky task. Hanging it above the head of the bed can go against the tenets of vastu (traditional Indian science of architecture), while pairing it with the rest of the furniture may seem tricky. However, if you’d still like some texture or print on your walls while keeping the décor simple, you could choose a patterned wallpaper to do the trick. It could be in your favourite colour or a style that matches the linens on your bed.

4. AMPLE STORAGE SOLUTIONS MAKE FOR THE BEST SIMPLE BEDROOM DESIGNS

The most utilitarian element you can incorporate in a room is ample storage. From a wasted nook or corner to the unused space across the breadths of your walls—creating uniform panelling to hide away cabinets and storage cupboards will help keep your room neater and tidier. In this simple bedroom interior design, we also see the desk and bedside tables with minimal pieces on their surfaces. This can be attributed to the generous amount of space in the drawers beneath them for storing various knick knacks and odds and ends.

5. THE RIGHT LIGHTING FOR SIMPLE BEDROOM DESIGNS

A simple bedroom has the most fuss-free designs and décor pieces. This includes finding clever ways to save space around the room. For the lights by the bedside, instead of taking up space on the side tables, you could instead install pendant lights hung from the ceiling or fit wall lights on each side of the headboard. Not only will this free up the table tops, but will also create better illumination while reading in bed with overhead or adjustable lighting.

6. THE RIGHT LINENS FOR A SIMPLE BEDROOM DESIGN

A simple bedroom interior design comprises clean lines, straightforward pieces of furniture and effortless décor. Since the linens dictate a large part of the bedroom’s aesthetic, choosing the right fabrics and colours can immediately echo a simple bedroom design. You could choose a basic solid colour in your favourite hue for the bedsheet, pillow cases and cushions covers (along with a throw) to keep your bedding visually fuss-free. If you want be make things even simpler—opt for all-white linens which will brighten and open up the room.

7. STICK TO THE BASICS IN A SIMPLE BEDROOM DESIGN INTERIOR DESIGN

To create more openness, and leave your room as minimal (and thereby peaceful and simple) as possible, stick to only the essentials required for a simple bedroom design. The main focus should always be the bed, of course, with side tables for storing things you regularly need on your bedside. Technology, such as TVs, computers and internet routers are distractions for a peaceful sleep. The focus of all simple bedroom designs should be creating a haven that’s peaceful, well-lit, ventilated and functional.

8. MOVABLE PIECES OF FURNITURE MAKE FOR SIMPLE BEDROOM DESIGNS

A clever idea for any small space is using multi-functional and movable pieces of furniture. While a bedside table is one of the most handy (and possibly underrated) tables in the bedroom, it could also be used in another space in the home when necessary. Getting a small bedside table with drawers for storage and wheels at the bottom will make it a versatile piece that can be wheeled into the living room when you need extra tabletops while hosting guests.

9. FOOLPROOF TRICKS FOR A SIMPLE BEDROOM DESIGN

Sometimes, the most easy and conventional design tricks in the book make for the best simple bedroom design ideas. Using lighter colours will open up a room, bringing in lesser pieces of furniture will make your floor space look bigger, and fitting a large mirror as a panel on the wall will add more visual depth to any space. In this bedroom in an Indian home, a textured mirror running across the height of the wall gives the illusion of added space behind the armchair. Do avoid monotony, light etchings and a linear pattern on the glass give the mirror a unique finish.

10. THE PERFECT COLOUR PALETTE FOR A SIMPLE BEDROOM DESIGN IN AN INDIAN HOME

Indian homes always have to find ways to stay cool during the hot summer months. The first thing to consider in a simple bedroom design is the colours and hues that will make it a calm and soothing haven away from the sweltering heat outdoors. While white, off-white or cream walls are always a safe bet, if you’d prefer to bring in some vibrance into the room with colour, choose the pastel version of your favourite hue.

EXPERT EYE: This simple bedroom design is a mélange of multiple shades, but we don’t realise it at first glance. In fact, if you look closely, you’ll notice the dusty peach walls colour-blocked against the soft grey bed linens. The key to this chic décor is layering, and the entire room is glamorously tied together with a hints of gilding around the mirrors, light fittings and drawer knobs.
