The Fort Printers, Galle

Mar 29, 2018

Take a leaf from the interiors of The Fort Printers, Galle to create a pared down yet colourful haven in your own home

In Sri Lanka’s quaint city of Galle, The Fort Printers is an 18th century mansion restored into an elegant boutique hotel.

Emulate its décor scheme with a sharp lined, minimalistic design, soothing shades and handcrafted details. Get the look with a four-poster bed, chaise longue and writing desk and chair à la Le Corbusier. The handcrafted wooden pieces of furniture will offset the monochromatic palette seen on the walls, linens and soft furnishings.

Style the bathrooms with white and grey – the contrast best unifies the space. Play with shades of grey, whether choosing to go with tiles or raw concrete.

Inclined to add colour in the room? Then, take a leaf from the hotel’s Arts and The Prefect’s rooms, and use vibrant shades in the tapestry, accents, bed linen and soft furnishings to brighten the room. Choose wooden flooring, in the form of tiles or planks, in the same shade as the slated windows, room partitions and doors to make the room seem cohesive.

To complete the look, dress up the interiors with pendant glass lamps, vintage-styled standing or table lamps, model cars and other knick-knacks that are reminiscent of the colonial era.

Soft furnishings aren’t the only way you can add colour to your interiors, here, the ochre floor instantly brightens up the space. The bright curtains and cushions accentuate the vividity of the floor. The neutral hued bed linen adds a semblance of balance.

Make the most use of a seating arrangement by propping it with pillows and highlighting the wall with wall sconces. To add a little bling, invest in brass and bronze showpieces.

It doesn’t take much to utilise empty spaces. Just find a spot under a window, place a table below and two chairs around it. For finishing touches, place a vase with flowers as a centerpiece on the table.

A shock of blue and orange curtains electrifies this entire space. Note how the cascading curtains on the frame of the bed create a dreamy feel. If you have a four-poster, you too can choose to drape curtains over it or leave the frame bare for a more edgy look.

To demarcate spaces within a single room, try different elevations, as seen in this suite at The Fort Printers, Galle. The seating area is considerably lower than the area where the bed has been placed. For some cohesion in the space, use wooden shutters with complementing wooden flooring.

The white and grey scheme is followed throughout the hotel. We love the matte finished grey floor, which is a pleasant change from wood and tile flooring. While all the furniture matches this overall scheme, the olive green curtains break the monotony.

Grey and white is a classic combo to adopt for your bathroom. While it creates a slight contrast, it isn’t as strong as black, which gives the combo an almost zen-like quality. For this, you can explore several options – concrete slabs, plain cement or an IPS flooring as well.
