Home automation ideas from the experts

In a fix on what product to buy for the home? We got three top designers and architects to share their top picks with us

Buying smart home products can be an expensive and confusing affair. With the internet offering such an array of home automation ideas, it can often be difficult to know where to look and especially, who to trust. No longer banished to the wild imagination of science fiction movies, the smart home is fast becoming a very real reality for a rapidly increasing number of us, dramatically improving lives, the world over.

But just what are smart home technology ideas?
A smart home utilises an intelligent, centralised automation system that manages all the devices in your home that are Wi-Fi-enabled. This means that you can pre-programme your electric curtain tracks, your smart coffee machine, toaster, heating and digital radio to turn on and work in harmony all before you wake up. Choosing an automation system which can coordinate, monitor and control all your devices is a great way of increasing the “intelligence” of your home. However, buying smart home appliances can be expensive. We often spend many fruitless hours online reading and researching which home automation ideas will give us the greatest bang for their buck.

What are the advantages of owning a smart house?
The aim of a smart home is to make life simpler, safer, and more comfortable. By being able to control multiple home devices simultaneously, the house can cater to your needs much quicker. Not only that, but specialised home products are also able to make our homes more secure, offering security systems which include professional surveillance services as well as window and door sensors, motion radar and carbon monoxide and smoke detectors. As home technology ideas increasingly become an intrinsic part of our lives, we reached out to several experts and asked what their go-to products are.

Sanjay Puri from Sanjay Puri Architects

Sanjay recommends television and music systems by B&O because the brand “combines sound quality, which is important, with amazing aesthetics and technology”. His other choices include Bulthaup kitchens and inbuilt appliances for that magic combination of function and visual design. He says, “the well-designed Nespresso coffee machine and the Whynter wine cooler, which offers dual temperature controls, are great additions.”

Krupa and Zubin Zainuddin from ZZ Architects

This duo suggests Lutron as the top choice for lighting and curtain controls. Their other recommendations include home automation products and smart home systems: “we also work with products such as Casa Digi Home Automation Systems, Crestron and Control4.”

Kalhan Mattoo from Planet 3 Studios

Simply put, Kalhan’s list is all about comfortable living. He mentions “Bose for music, Siemens for inbuilt appliances, Daikin air-conditioners, and Samsung for television sets.” Most importantly, as a security feature, he recommends Yale for their range of electronic locks.
