Some of our happiest childhood memories are the birthday parties our parents threw for us. All our friends pouring in, games, noisy chatter and peals of laughter. As parents now, we want to carry on that happy tradition for our kids. So, we asked Saloni Parikh, founder of Capota, a unique party-supplies e-shop, for her best tips on throwing a stress-free and entertaining get-together for your little ones:
CHALK OUT A GUEST LIST
"Your first step should be to put down a guest list so you won't forget anyone. This will also help you estimate the budget, pick a venue, figure out décor and activity requirements as well as get an understanding of food and beverage for the party."
PICK A VENUE AND THEME
"You could plan a birthday for your kids at your own house or backyard. If you’re inviting a larger group of people, including children’s parents, it might be prudent to book a restaurant or hotel function room. Set a theme your kids will love, and you feel confident about. Committing to one makes it easy to plan the decor and food. You could even have your guest dress up according to the theme."
SEND OUT THE INVITATIONS
"Once you have settled on the venue and theme, send out invitations that set the tone for the party. E-invites are a practical and easy way to go about it. The ideal time to send invitations is about two to three weeks prior. This is also the time to ask

parents if their kids have any food allergies you need to be aware of."
ALWAYS PLAN FUN GAMES, ENTERTAINMENT AND/OR ACTIVITIES "Prepare some enjoyable activities and games to keep the little guests entertained, such as craft and scrapbook corners, treasure hunts, decorating cupcakes and musical chairs. You could also plan activities related to the theme you chose. An all-time party favourite are photo booths—create a vibrant space for your little guests to take photos and make memories. Choose an empty wall and decorate it with a foil curtain. Get a few photo props that match your theme. You can even get instant cameras, so they can take a souvenir home."
The star Indian elements take shape in the form of food and desserts. Instead of cupcakes, try Kaju Katli and Balushahi and the popular Indian milk cake can been turned into a birthday cake.
This theme uses creamy white as a beautiful canvas for the bright colours to pop without being too overpowering.
Vibrant plates of different shapes and sizes, pretty straws, along with fun party cups and napkins make the table setting interesting.
DECORATE WITH EASY-TO-FIND INDIAN ELEMENTS
Remember, the party starts at the front door; it's always a good idea to decorate the entrance of your house. Balloons and streamers add a cheery birthday feel to any space and are an inexpensive way to fill up the room. Tie up each balloon with long ribbons and stick a multitude to the ceiling with invisible glue dots (that are easy to remove). For streamers, simple twirls work wonders. For this birthday celebration packed with Indian elements, the flowers used are lotuses and roses. The star Indian elements take shape in the form of food and desserts. Instead of cupcakes, present Indian sweets like kaju katli and balushahi in fun new ways for kids to enjoy and turn the popular milk cake into a birthday cake like we have. The salty snacks are chaklis and namak pareys.
MAKE THE CAKE AREA THE FOCAL POINT
Cakes are the star of any birthday party. Work the theme into the cake table as well. This theme uses creamy white as a beautiful canvas for the bright colours to pop without being too overpowering. Colourful party fan décor is hung on the wall while silver is used as an accent throughout. Vibrant plates of different shapes and sizes, pretty straws, along with fun party cups and napkins make the table setting come alive. Don't forget to dress up your cake with candles and cake toppers. It never loses its appeal.
DON’T FORGET CUTE PARTY FAVOURS
Kids love keepsakes from birthday parties. Be sure to give out birthday favours that are tied to your theme, so they carry home the vibe of the party with them.
