Traditional interior design with Indian wall décor & printed furnishings - Beautiful Homes

Traditional interior design is classic and versatile. Read on to find out how to use it in your homes for timeless and charming interiors

All great interiors rest at the balanced nexus of space, shape, line, colour, light, texture and pattern. Each interior design style has a different approach to achieving this goal. The traditional style interior design has perfected it and hence continues to remain a classic.

What is Traditional Interior Design?

Traditional interior design is often described as timeless and classic. While these adjectives may seem generic, in this case, take them a bit more literally. This style encompasses design elements from various eras throughout history. The result is what a culture would consider "traditional house interior design". Traditional style interior design is warm, welcoming and most of all familiar. It is pretty accurate to dub it as placeless and timeless.

Now, it's important to understand that the context changes with regions and cultures. And so, India has its notion of traditional home and traditional interior design. It, of course, varies quite a bit across communities, regions and eras. The "western" style of the traditional home interior design largely echoes the interior design style traditions of 18th and 19th century Europe.

This style has evolved to fit our modern sensibilities, so you often see contemporary homes with traditional hints. The traditional modern house is a result of this fusion. It is a style of its own- generally referred to as the transitional style.

Elements of Traditional Home Interior Design

Traditional Indian and western-style interiors, as we understand them today, despite being quite different, have some commonalities.

  • Visible architectural details in the interiors
  • Dark wood finishes for furniture and flooring
  • There's no shying away from embellishments and ornamentation
  • Curved lines and rounded shapes are a staple
  • Layouts and space planning focus on symmetry and harmony as opposed to the juxtaposition

Two obvious points of departure for these two traditional styles are colours, patterns, materials, etc.

Timeless Traditional Interior Design Ideas for your Home

Here are some traditional house interior design and traditional décor ideas that you can incorporate into your home for classic elegant interiors.

1. Structural Details in a Traditional Home

The architecture of the house reflects the traditional elements. First and foremost is the expansive living area. The 'more is more' approach of the traditional interior design works well because there is enough space for everything. In traditional western homes, panelled walls, intricate ceilings with mouldings and medallions, etc., are typical.

In traditional Indian homes, you'll come across many outdoor spaces that facilitate the indoor-outdoor living concept. Some examples are courtyards in the centre, verandas with pitched roofs and jharokhas. The embellished ceilings can also be found in haveli-style homes.

There are ways that you can add such details even in modern homes. For example, you may opt for wall panelling, crown mouldings using POP, or adding jaalis to the balcony.

2. Carved Elements in Traditional Home Décor

Carvings, moulding and inlays are used in traditional design to add decorative features to virtually everything— furnishings, doors, frames, etc., nothing is off-limits. This celebration of ornamentation and attention to detail lends traditional décor its character and elegance.

You can go all-out and create a completely traditional room with antique furniture and décor. Ensure that the furniture you get either forms a complete set or at least matches enough. It'll help with maintaining the symmetry and cohesion in the design.

If you want to introduce a few traditional aspects in your design, look for intricate statement pieces such as sofas, diwans, almirah, a four-poster bed, etc. Alternatively, you can focus on the details— frames of artworks and mirrors, door frames, handicrafts, etc.

3. Curves and Arche

When it comes to shapes and lines, traditional interiors are diametrically opposed to modern and contemporary styles that favour sleek, clean and angular lines. Curved armrests, arched backrests, and cabriole furniture legs give the room a majestic feel like no other. Add to it intricate carvings and inlays, and the elegance will remain unmatched. These soft curvy lines also are quite soothing and inviting.

4. Traditional Décor Ideas - Textiles and Patterns

Textiles are a great way to add colour, pattern and texture to your interiors. Depending on the type of look you're trying to achieve, there are a plethora of options to choose from. For an earthy and warm ambience, opt for materials like cotton and jute in natural colours such as indigo, mustard, rust, burnt umber, etc. If you're aiming for a royal-esque style, silk, brocade, damask, and velvet are excellent starting points. In this case, you can even opt for brighter hues such as yellow, violets, orange, green, etc.

Avoid abstract and geometric designs with hard lines and angles when you choose patterns. You can never go wrong with florals; both stylised and botanical fit right in. If you're not a fan of patterns, start with colour blocking. Pillows and cushions make for great little accents. And if you like how it looks, take it up a notch with curtains, upholstery and ornate Persian or afghan rugs.

5. Lighting in Traditional Homes

The maximalism of the traditional style carries on even with light fixtures. Chandeliers, sconces, candelabras, and ornate table lamps are all right at home in traditional house interiors. To maintain symmetry and cohesion, get a pair of fixtures when possible. And ensure that the finish matches the traditional home décor of the room. If you want to keep the décor lowkey but still have statement pieces or traditional hints in your traditional modern house, statement light fixtures are the way to go.

6. Indian Traditional Interior Staples- Jaalis and Jhoolas

Jaalis are screens, walls or doors with intricate carvings and cutouts. These are used to maintain privacy while allowing light and air to filter in. The play of light and shadow created by jaalis is mesmerising, to say the least. Its use has now altered to separate various rooms and spaces in a home. Jhoolas or swings have been an integral part of Indian households. Initially used in the courtyards and other outdoor spaces, you now see them as a part of Indian living rooms and balconies. These age-old staples have adapted to modern homes while retaining the Indian touch.

7. Traditional Décor, Art and Accessories

Paintings of portraits, still life and landscapes were very much a part of traditional homes. In the Indian context, you also come across frescoes, reliefs, sculptures and murals in home interiors. The addition of art in any form can elevate the décor in any room. Look into incorporating classical and folk art through painting or murals. When considering the living room design, exploring the incorporation of classical and folk art through paintings or murals can truly elevate the décor and create a captivating atmosphere.

If you're an antique collector, now is the time to showcase the beauties. A gallery wall, a dedicated shelf, or spread them across the home as baubles are a few ways to do it. Family heirlooms, furniture, rugs, plates, etc., all make for gorgeous décor and accessories.

How do you Design Traditional-style Homes?

  • Prioritise symmetry and cohesion when choosing layouts.
  • In western-style homes, opt for neutral palettes and jewel tones for pops.
  • In an Indian-style home, don't shy away from colour. Part of the charm and liveliness is the riotous colours.
  • Since the traditional style doesn't belong to any specific era, don't be afraid to take inspiration from various periods for dynamic interiors.
  • Use textiles and patterns freely and ensure all furniture is upholstered.
  • Wood, terracotta, and marble are popular flooring options.
  • Don't forget the windows— jaalis, layered curtains, curtain valances, shutters, etc. are all a part of traditional window treatments.
  • Mix it up with reproductions, antiques and contemporary pieces to avoid a showroom set-up and dated look.
  • Additionally, use it as an inspiration or starting point instead of the end goal for intentional and personalised interiors.
