Floor lamps are an incredible way to illuminate certain areas in your home. If you have a floor mattress or a water bed, the floor standing lamp could serve as a bedside lamp as well. If you have an old floor lamp, that is still functional but doesn’t exactly blend well with the surroundings. You can still refurbish it and reuse it to ensure that you don’t lose out on value. Plus, vintage stuff would look good if it sits well with your interior design style. In this article, we will tell you how to refurbish your old floor lamp.

If your lamp has a faded and old design, it doesn’t mean it is a waste now. You can refurbish the lamp (including the lampshade) and resume it in décor. Here’s how you do it.

1.    Clean the lamp

Before you can refurbish your lamp (and turn it into floor lamps for living room), you may set it aside and remove the lampshade from the lamp. Never forget to remove the bulb and any other wires that are plugged in when you are cleaning your lamp. Clean the lamp frame and stem thoroughly. You may use a cleansing wipe for this or just a wet cloth. A solution of vinegar and lime juice on a rag can also be a great alternative. Be careful that you do not damage the ports or any electronic or electric socket connections with moisture or a non-alcoholic solution. The same methods can be used to clean the lampshade as well. Make sure the cloth you use for cleaning the lampshade is not too damp if you have a

textile-based lampshade and not a plastic one. You may also use a vacuum if the lampshade is fabric-based and not plastic.

2.    Prep the lamp for a paint

You can repaint the lamp you have with a new color. This can include the base and the stem of the lamp. But before you can go to that, there are a few prerequisites you need to take care of. These are as follows :
●    Cover any electronic or electric sockets with newspaper or painter’s tape
●    Paint getting into those parts could pose a threat to the functioning of the lamp
●    To remove some of the old paint, you may use a paint removal solution.
●    To remove stubborn chips of old paint, you can sand off the portions of the lamp frame that have these chips
●    Sand any metal portions as well to ensure smoothness
●    Wipe the frame off with a dry cloth to remove any sand dust or excess paint chips

You can then prep the lamp frame for a primer and a paint coat. Ensure that you wear a painter’s mask and goggles to prevent any of the sanding dust from entering your nose, eyes, or mouth.

3.    Prime and Paint

After you have done the sanding process on the lamp frame, you can go ahead with applying a primer and paint on the lamp frame and stem. Make sure you do so in thin coats multiple times, and not one thick coat of the paint. Also, make sure that you select the correct primer and paint for your lamp frame. This is important to understand because paint affects a metal lamp frame differently and a wooden lamp frame differently.

Make sure you are applying your paint and primer in a well-ventilated area. If the paint you are using contains heavy chemicals, wear a mask. Make sure you let the primer dry completely before you put on the paint coats. Then ensure that the paint coats have dried completely before you put the lamp back together. This entire process can take anywhere between a couple of hours to an entire night - depending on various factors like the size of the lamp frame, the paint you have used, etc. Please ensure that the paint is dry before you bring the lamp back into your home - nothing should be sticky or tacky.

4.    Refurbish the lampshade

This is a multi-tasking activity. While the primer and paints on the lamp frame are drying up, you can start refurbishing the lampshade. Refurbishing a lampshade essentially entails that you make the lampshade sit well with the current design and  This can be done in various ways.
●    You can cover the outside of the lampshade with fabric. This can give a muted, soft lighting experience.
●    You can apply sequins or buttons or other embellishments to your lampshade to give it a slight personality.
●    You can use patterned wallpaper or decoupage paper on the sides of the lampshade. This could lead to a muted or patterned look in the lamp
       illumination.
●    You can paint the lamp with a stencil or engrave letters on it to impart a reflection.
●    You can cover your lampshade in gold leaf. This would give it a regal look.

5.    Put the lamp back together

After all the paint has dried up, the decorations are done with, and your lampshade is ready, you can start putting your lamp back together by re-assembling all the components. You can first remove the newspaper or painter’s tape you had used earlier to plug the electrical or electronic sockets, the light sockets, and the power plug. You can then place the shade back on the lamp and secure it depending on whether your lampshade just sits atop or gets screwed in. You can then add a fresh bulb or multiple fresh bulbs to ensure that your lamp now illuminates well. You may choose from an LED lamp or a CFL lamp.

Once you are done refurbishing your lamp you can use it to illuminate various areas of your house. This could mean floor lamps for bedroom or the living room. You can also use the lamp to be placed on a table and use it as a reading light. Designer floor lamps or modern floor lamps can also be used to ensure illumination depending on the vibe of the space. Designer floor lamps, or a combination of a floor lamp with table or shelves can be a useful addition to your library or a bookshelf. Floor lights would help illuminate your reading area well. Modern floor lamps (like the one you just modernized) can be used to illuminate the entire room depending on the power of the bulb used.
