A sneak peek into Shonali Mahajan's latest project

Bringing International standards to the Indian décor space has been interior designer Shonali Mahajan’s area of expertise. Her Mumbai based firm, Studio Wodehouse showcases her signature style in all their explorations. In one of her latest projects, she chose the newly-launched Royale collection of furnishings from the House of Asian Paints to best represent her design.

Bringing International standards to the Indian décor space has been interior designer Shonali Mahajan’s area of expertise. To curate this particular living room in a spectacular South Mumbai apartment, she took inspiration from the book ‘Entryways of Milan: Ingressi di Milano’ by Taschen.

The Theme

Located in South Mumbai, the apartment looks out to a spectacular view of skyscrapers and smaller buildings that huddle together in an interesting manner. It reminded Shonali of a Manhattan loft and that’s how she wanted the final look to be like. To detail the space further she paired the aesthetic by taking inspiration from a book, ‘Entryways of Milan: Ingressi di Milano’ by Taschen. Marble floors, architectural forms and monolithic designs were translated from the pages of this book to the material palette for the space.

The Space

True to the theme, the living room has a mix of strong sculptural elements with materials and colours picked up from the many Milanese entrance halls captured in the book. To begin with, the backdrop of the room is a black veneered wall. A white wall stands next to it bringing in a sharp contrasting look. There were a few existing columns in the room that were beefed up and rounded by the team so that they stood out and yet blended in with the rest of the setting. For the floor, Shonali selected a black Marquina marble with brass inlay. Framed mirrors are put up behind the sofa facing the windows in order to bring a glimpse of the outdoors inside. The other key pieces include the mid-century chairs, the bar and the metal cast centre table.

The Furnisings

Shonali furnished the room by handpicking fabrics that brought the space alive. Two collections from the Royale x Pure range of furnishings resonated with the aesthetic of the space. The TATTVA collection features contemporary patterns in black and white with clean lines. The second one, IKIGAI collection, stems from a historical and cultural context. Shonali went with a neutral white sofa and layered it with black and white cushions made with the Weston Jade black, Meander Obsidian and Baxter Nero fabrics. The bar chairs too were upholstered in a similar fabric. For the accent chairs she used a rust coloured cotton-velvet fabric called Bakshi Russet. To finish the look, she chose a fabric called Pearo Zinia for the chairs, to add in a pop of colour.
