Failure

One of the key things in that first impression is your main door design and its usability. The front door should create a warm and welcoming impression while reflecting your core values and personal style. A house door design should be durable and stylish. It should be able to withstand everyday wear and tear with ease and also protect you from the elements. Door selection can get overwhelming pretty soon considering the sheer amount of options one has in the market when you go out door-shopping. This article is useful for everyone - whether you’re choosing a new door while building a new home or selecting a replacement door for your renovation exercise, you will want the front door to create a lasting impression.

Now, doors can be an expensive investment, and generally, people make some mistakes while choosing or assembling doors. It is important to rethink and go over your door design choices once before making a final pick. We have curated a list of all such mistakes, to ensure that you don't commit any one of these. Read on!

1.    Not doing enough research

Door selection should not be an impulse decision. Neither should it be downgraded in priority thinking ”it’s just a door”. Just like any other large purchase, door selection should be given the appropriate importance. Better research leads to better results. While options for the front door can be practically limitless - from wood to material, to panels, decorative inlays of glass, etc. it is best to review your decision carefully.

Consider weather and elemental (sun, rain, hail) exposure for the door. Make sure you stick to your budget and not overreach. Consider the size very carefully. Unlike most cases, in the case of door selection - size matters.

2.    Using an incorrect installation method

Choosing the right door is not the full task. To ensure that your door is fitted properly, check the following :
●    The bottom plates must be aligned
●    The door should be plumb with the wall
●    If there is a decorative glass inlay, make sure it is supported from the inside and not just ‘popped in’
●    A flashing system could be used to prevent water infiltration
●    Floors should be leveled

3.    Not having the proper measurements

When it comes to front doors, a perfect fit is inexcusable. Wood doors and steel doors have different aging mechanisms, and hence a perfect fit for both may differ. Some wood door designs come as a complete set - leaf and frame - that is a ready-to-install package. It is recommended to get a professional to get the measurements for the door and the fittings, as even a slight mistake of a centimeter can make the dimensions go wrong. You don’t want to be in a position where you’ll have to resize the entire door-set, as that will lead to a dozen different issues. Make sure you don’t find yourself in a situation where you need to return the door to your manufacturer or supplier, as this endeavor might also cost you dearly.

4.    Incorrect Material Choices

In the past, as tradition, front doors were made of wood. Wooden door design made it imperative to make doors from solid wood that are durable and can be painted and carved designs onto, and hence are the go-to choice when it comes to modern door design for your home design. But solid wood has its disadvantages. Solid wood requires an extensive amount of care and maintenance. In order to preserve its look and feel, solid wood needs to be glossed frequently. It is also very expensive as a choice, so if you’re on a tight budget on the main door design for your home, solid wood may not be the way to go. There are other options like engineered wood. These are doors made out of a fiberboard along with a top layer of hardwood veneers that makes it look and feel exactly like a solid wood door. This is also sometimes called a plywood door. Engineered wood doors have a greater amount of stability than solid wood doors, and are less affected by the elements (rain, snow, sun, hail, sleet, etc.) Try thinking about the following questions :
●    What are the weather conditions that my door will be exposed to?
●    Does my door get direct sunlight every morning and afternoon?
●    Does the rainy season lead to water infiltration? Wooden doors blow up in such conditions, and become larger than they are supposed to be.
●    If the doorway is not covered, wehat kind of environmental conditions would it be exposed to on a daily basis?

Check out the following non-wood material choices to understand each material’s pros and cons.

Fiberglass :

It is extremely durable and energy efficient. Fiberglass is also very low maintenance as a material. Fiberglass can be made available in any stain or finish of color. FIberglass also be made to look like real wood if you’d like that design choice.

Metal :

Steel doors are generally a steel skin over a wooden or metal door frame (usually steel frame) and an inner filing of high-density foam. There can be any number of finishes possible on a steel door. These can be baked-on polyester, wood veneers or even a vinyl coating. Steel doors are more durable than the rest. But they do come with their own set of disadvantages. The finish on the door can peel off in direct sunlight due to heat buildup. Also, elemental transference is possible - for example, heat and cold both can be transferred from the exterior to the interior, thereby increasing humidity. Aluminium doors can also buckle under heat and bend.

5.    Wrong finish choices

When we say wrong finish choices here, we mean the wrong color choice, the wrong paint choice, the wrong strength choice, and so on. The main entrance modern door design being the first impression, is also the gateway (once again, pun intended!) to your color scheme. The incorrect color choice for your door can have a detrimental effect on the vibe and look and feel of your home. Wood veneers can be a great choice when it comes to wood based finishes in door décor. It is very important that you maintain consistency in your color scheme and the door is an important part of that. Choose the right finish and gloss for your door to give it a stable and robust feel.

6.    Not matching the door with your home’s architecture

The architecture or architectural style of your home is an unmistakable theme underlying the entire construction of the house. You do not have to be an interior designer to figure out the style your home is built with. It is very important to match your door with the look and feel of your house. Pairing a Victorian iron door design with a modern apartment would not be a good choice now, would it? You also need to be aware of the proportions in your home. The windows’ heights and the door heights need to be compatible to avoid looking out of place.
