3 romantic getaways with stunning interiors

  • Interior Design
Feb 08, 2018

Here’s our pick of romantic destinations with decor as stunning as the location itself

If there’s something we swear by, it’s the attention to details, especially when it comes to interior design. Be it gestures or experiences, there’s nothing we enjoy more than a well curated and thoughtful approach. And that’s why these getaways have made it to our wander-list.

Jilling Terraces, Uttarakhand
Set amidst the lush forests of the Himalayas in Uttarakhand, Jilling Terraces is reminiscent of an old country house. The 80 year old brick, stone and wood bungalow has been converted into a homestay and has been restored with an aesthetic typical of hilly areas. White washed walls, casement windows, high gabled ceilings with wooden beams and warm dhurries dot the interiors of this house. The thoughtful interior design elements blend harmoniously with the natural surroundings, offering guests a charming and authentic experience. The four rooms – Buransh, Utish, Kamal and Padam take cues and reflect the colours of the flowers they are named after. Each room is spacious, airy and allows for sweeping views of the surrounding areas, especially the snow-clad mountains. On offer is also a standalone cottage called Ringol, with slatted wooden floors, timber ceilings and white walls. For those with an adventurous streak, Jilling offers treks as well.

Forest Hills, Tala
What sets Forest Hills, Tala apart from other destinations is that it has something for all travellers, no matter what their style. The eight luxury villas have distinct features setting them apart from the rest. While the Pink Parrot and Blue Butterfly, brought to life by ace designer Krsnaa Mehta reflect a touch of whimsical grandiose, those who crave the simple life should pick the all wood Woodpecker. Camel Cabin paints a picture straight out of the Arabian Nights, with a billowing canopy on the ceiling and rich red hues and Tree Hopper transports you to the Jungle Book, with its treehouse-like build. If you’re straight-up in the mood for some hearty indulgence and love modern décor, look no further than Glass House, designed by Architecture BRIO’s Robert Verrijt and Shefali Balwani. We love how the glass façade merges the indoors with the outdoors.

The Serai Resorts, Chikmaglur
If you want to experience nature in all its glory, and not give up on the earthy comforts the city provides, then The Serai Resorts is for you. The four villas come with their own luxuries - one with a jacuzzi, another with a pool, yet another has its own terrace while another offers designer interiors. The swanky interiors reflect wood and marble floors, contemporary furniture and boast a neutral colour palette. It offers several amenities – right from custom spas and lounge facilities to a signature restaurant and trekking trails to the surrounding coffee plantations.

Glass House by Architecture BRIO has a full glass façade that merges the outdoors with the indoors. The neutral colour scheme helps it blend with the surroundings. Emulate this in your own house with floor to ceiling windows.
In order to preserve the surroundings, Architecture BRIO built the house around the trees in the region, and so, one passes through the bathroom as well.
The bedroom is done up with natural elements and follows the overall neutral colour scheme as well. The patio affords sweeping views of the hillsides.
The most amount of colour is perhaps seen in this room, with its bright fuchsia sofa, multicoloured dhurrie and bright yellow linen. What we love though is how none of them overpower each other.
A great way of uplifting neutral interiors is by adding textures. In Kafal, the tactile white wall and embroidered neutral bedsheet enhance the muted colour scheme.
The bedroom named after the lotus has a high gabled wooden ceiling and pink undertones. The pale pink dhurrie adds a layer of warmth.
The sole cottage at Jilling Terraces continues the design language seen in the main house. The dining room uses a bookshelf approach to sort jars, china and sink counter.
Pops of colour have been added to the living space by means of a lavender sofa and indigo dhurrie. A quaint seating space by the fireplace adds a homely vibe.
Spacious patios with wooden flooring lookout to the scenic views of the forest. Recreate the vacation vibe in your own balcony - place a desk, chair and potted greens for effect.
A classic trick used to mimic extra space is the usage of mirrors. Use two on opposite ends to make the space seem larger. Another way to separate spaces is by using different fooring.
Make full use of your floor to ceiling windows by creating a baithak near it. Prop with bright, colourful cushions to make it comfortable, as seen in the Estate with Pool at The Serai, Chikmaglur.
What’s a romantic getaway without a private pool? Spoil yourself silly at The Serai in their estates which boast private pools and even jacuzzis.
Lights can definitely make or break the ambience of any setting. For the perfect lighting at special candlelight dinner, light up candles, hurricanes and suspend paper lamps for maximum impact.
