Interior designer tips to look out for, for interior designer beginners - Beautiful Homes

The art of making your living space as comfortable and aesthetically pleasing as possible is a difficult one to master. As a newbie to Interior Design, achieving that appealing vibe that looks oh-so-chic is not that easy

Most interior design and décor concepts are simple to read and assimilate but doing the good stuff in practice takes some time and experience. Designing or decorating a space for the first time is much like cooking for the first time with a recipe in hand. It makes perfect sense on paper but the execution has its own nuances. Jumping into decorating a perfect home without simple interior design tips is like cooking without the recipe or instructions - it could end terribly. We have compiled some easy tips on home decorating featuring some DOs and DON’Ts when it comes to interior design.

The DOs

1. Leave Space Around your Furniture

The room looks much more inviting when the furniture is spaced out well. When you allow more room around each piece of furniture, moving around the room becomes easier. Placing your furniture against the walls inhibits conversational tendencies, and hence placing your furniture away from the walls is the way to go. This is called conversational grouping in home interior design. There is also something called the Goldilocks Zone for conversational seating - this means a gap of a minimum of 4 feet and a maximum gap of 8 feet between furniture and other elements like walls or cabinets.

2. Choose your Paint Colours Wisely

The paint colours you choose can make or break the vibe of your room. Although reading colour undertones and understanding palettes and combinations can take years of experience, basic colour combinations and matching techniques can help you choose better paints for the interior design of your home. Concepts like contrast and blends should not be lost on you while doing home interior design. Poorly matched colour shades can result in a loss of appeal and hence subsequently lead to adverse effects on the aesthetic value of the room.

3. Invest in Good Pillows

Pillows in the bedroom and the living room should be functional, supportive, plush, and soft. Latest interior design trends show that decorative pillows can add an ‘oomph’ factor to any room they are placed in. This helps you realize the extent of, and hence break, its ‘blockiness’.

4. Pay Attention to your Hallway

Your hallway is an amazing opportunity for your guests to ponder and take in the vibe of the place. And it also is a good time to make a statement about your style quotient. It may not be grandiose, but it should be bold and memorable. Use of a slew of paintings or a patterned coat on the wall can add some personality to the hallway. A large mirror or a mural can do the trick as well. In some cases, depending on the length of the hallways, placing a table with an incredible vase, a key stash, and other paraphernalia may add some utility to the hallways area as well.

5. Use Accent Pieces

The accent pieces in and around your house would make things appear interesting, but make sure you don’t overdo it. It also shouldn’t be an overwhelming load of things.

For example, say you are a person who likes cars. Displaying a few collectible editions or quarter-size models of a few cars here and there in your house, like on a bookshelf or on an office desk, is a much better idea than having a car-themed room for yourself.

The DON’Ts

1. Don’t Match Everything

If everything is of the same colour or similar texture, it would lend the same look and feel monotonous. Instead of matching everything from furniture to paint colour, try creating a relation to make it homely, warm, and inviting. The room should feel connected instead of similar. Things that add a personality, a splash of colour, and some appeal to the space are much better than having an all-white stateroom.

2. Don’t Use Tiny Potted Plants in the Middle of the House

If you are a plant lover, make use of a separate space or a nursery to pursue the hobby. If at all, you want to place some house plants in the hall or the bedroom area, small potted plants are not the best option. It makes the place seem cluttered and clunky. Instead, opt for a fern or a large plant in a pot. Small flowers were all the rage in the 70s, but modern interior design demands a statement.

3. Don’t Mix Up Colours Too Much

You want a cohesive feel in the rooms you design, not a colour palette on the loose. This means you don’t want to paint every room in a different colour. It will take away from the connectivity in your interior design style, and feel messy. Choose hues of the colours you like to bring a sense of cohesion and a theme to your home’s design style. Make sure the hues are still consistent. For example, cyan is very far from cobalt blue - so just because it is blue it doesn't make sense to have such a contrasty feel in your home. The same case can be made for mauve and lavender.

4. Don’t Isolate your Rooms

A great top on home decorating is that there needs to be a seamless, flowy journey to be made from one room to the other. This needs to happen to give your house a consistent effect. This cohesion can be achieved by a concept called “carrying”. It literally means carrying over an accent colour or a pattern from one room to the other or all rooms, to achieve a sense of theme. This linking of adjacent spaces creates a sense of continuity which is aesthetically pleasing.

5. Don’t Skimp on Seating Space

Allowing for a flowy conversation requires ample seating space and seating options. For the living room areas, ensure there’s plenty of furniture like chairs or sofas that will make space for a conversation to keep going. If space is going to be a trouble, make sure you stack up on utilitarian origami-style furniture which may take less space but still serve as more seats.
