With this DIY, we get technical and look at some useful painting techniques which can be applied to anything that requires minimal equipment but produces a maximal effect.
Using simple repetitive brush strokes to create a combination of patterns, we can give these old flower pots a fresh look. We used clay pots, because they are cheap, eco-friendly, socially-responsible and simply beautiful—use what you have at home, and avoid buying anything new, especially plastic planters. Once you have the basics, all you need are two brushes: a flat broad one (1 inch is fine) and a thinner, pointy one.
A few points to consider:
1. Your final product will look best with two contrasting colours of your choice: we opted for a classic black and white combination to give it an elegant look but any two colours or even tone on tone (one lighter than the other but in the same shade) will look great.
2. Geometric shapes work best on pots as they offset the organic shapes of the leaves.
3. Use the two contrast brushes to explore some basic designs which will always look blend well in any mix-and-match situation.
