From all the lighting brands at Salone that illuminated the trends and designs for the season, these are our picks

On the table, off the wall, from the ceiling or over the dining table—lighting in all its many incarnations is a necessity, but it also serves a higher purpose, that of being sculptural installations in the guise of function. Don’t believe us? Then these spotlight-worthy creations from some seriously design-savvy lighting brands that we saw at the 2019 Salone del Mobile will convince you. Here is a carefully considered, thoughtfully curated selection of lights that led the charge.

Brand van Egmond
When designer and founder William Brand started Brand van Egmond in 1989, his objective was to craft lighting sculptures. That the philosophy has continued to be a driving principle was reinforced at Salone del Mobile. The stand-out Brand van Egmond lights include creations for the Ersa collection. Named after the Greek goddess of dew, these designs hint as much to the fresh start of a new day as the thirst for renewal. The iridescence on the glass leads to the gradual change of colour as the angle of view or illumination changes. Donning simple yet elegant candlelit lanterns, the Louise collection makes for a quiet centre of attention.

Swarovski Lighting
Already a favourite with leading architects and interior designers, Swarovski’s crystal lighting and interior solutions have become an integral part of luxurious building projects, not only offering a stunning range of elements to choose from, but also providing an endless source of creativity to design tailor-made solutions. The Blossom chandelier by Dutch designer Tord Boonjte for Swarovski Lighting proved to be a hot favourite. If bling is your thing then this just the piece you need to add brilliance to your living room. Inspired by a delicately twisted tree branch, bejewelled with LED crystal blossoms, it presents a pretty picture.

FontanaArte was founded in Milan in 1932 by Gio Ponti, the legendary 20th-century Italian architect, sheet-glass entrepreneur Luigi Fontana and glass artisan Pietro Chiesa. FontanaArte’s ideology was to explore a timeless expression of modernity and beauty by infusing glass and metal with light and transparency. This creativity is present even in its current products. The blown-glass-and-metal ‘Pinecone’ lamp by Paola Navone for FontanaArte represents simplicity and sophistication at its best.

Ingo Maurer
In the lighting industry, the name Ingo Maurer at once evokes ideas of expertise, design innovation and passion. Simplicity and whimsicality are some of the expressions that define the brand’s collections. The quirky yet simple design of the ‘Lucellino’ table lamp uses glass, brass, plastic and handcrafted goose-feather wings. The other light that grabbed attention was the ‘Oskar on the Shelf’ lamp, a new version of the illuminating bookend, ‘Oskar’. The shelf floats lightly and freely on the wall, providing support for books, mobile phones, glasses and keys.

Foscarini imagines, develops and produces decorative lamps that are always inspirational and frequently surprising in their design. The brand’s lights are conceived as design objects that transform spaces, like ‘Soffio’. By designers Ludovica and Roberto Palomba, it is a well-defined table lamp made from blown glass and aluminium.
