Meet production designer and visual storyteller, Shruti Gupte

Our guest stylist, production designer Shruti Gupte has been part of the set design industry for over a decade. Here’s everything you need to know about her

We all shed a tear while watching ‘Taare Zameen Par’ and enjoyed the story of a self-proclaimed matchmaking expert in ’Aisha’. But did you ever wonder what it would be like if these movies didn’t have the added layer of set design. So much thought goes into creating a home for a fictional character. What are the characters' likes and choices when it comes to their personal spaces and life in general. Shruti Gupte does exactly that. She makes a script and its characters come alive in a physical format.

With Asian Paints latest launches on their way, we invited her to design home areas with the brand's high quality products. Great quality furniture, lights and designer fabrics all come under one roof, The House of Asian Paints. To style these with elements of Indian craftsmanship, and objects that bring along history is a vision Shruti translated into rooms. She created personalities that would reside in these homes, and styled the narrative in that way. But before we move on let’s get to know her better.

Here’s How She Got Started..

After pursuing her architecture course at CEPT University, Shruti landed an opportunity to work in films as a production designer. One of her first projects was the Abhishek Bachchan starrer Mumbai Se Aaya Mera Dost, for which she had to build an imaginary village on a barren piece of land. She then went on to work with ad film director Prahlad Kakkar for some time before moving on as an independent production designer.

Her Process, From Idea to Execution

Shruti begins with a lot of references and research. This allows her to understand how different people decorate their homes. She then gets to the details, like the choice of colours, or the products and how they are placed. After which she reinvents these details in her own way, making it fresh and interesting. Then begins the product scouting part of the process. According to the theme of the space and personality of the person residing in it, she chooses items that best relate to the brief. This way there is a sense of familiarity in the final look but also a certain uniqueness to it.

Her Take on the Project with Beautifulhomes.com

Her aim with this project was to create homes that showcase the residents personality. Staying away from the trend of minimalism, Shruti brought out the essence of the inhabitants through décor.

Production designer Shruti Gupte styles spaces that nurtures its people while maintaining a beautiful aesthetic.

The choice of objects also bring a sense of comfort, as it reminds them of treasured memories or things that evoke calm. Many believe that a well done house can only boast of catalogue-perfect  interiors. But in our cities, where the average apartment isn’t too big, there’s so much that one can experiment with. So many layers can form a beautifully done apartment. One that nurtures its people while welcoming guests with a home-like feeling.
