Architect Sandeep Khosla tells us about the biggest influences in his career and the one structure that he wishes he had designed

Architect Sandeep Khosla established his eponymous firm in 1995. After finishing his masters in architecture at Pratt Institute, New York, Sandeep returned to India and did an early stint at legendary architect Charles Correa’s office before launching on his own. Beautiful Homes caught up with the Bengaluru based architect about his work, the people who have influenced him in his career and on the kind of projects that he has on his wishlist.

What is your earliest memory of wanting to be an architect?

The first Architectural history class I took at Bard College in Upstate New York. My professor was good, the subject inspiring.

Which project  was a turning point for your firm?

"180 Proof", a resto-bar designed within a prominent 100 year old Tudor style colonial building in Bangalore's business district.

What has been the most challenging project that you have worked on?

Cliff house in Kerala- a very ambitious project which took seven years to finally realise its vision after a lot of heartache and changing three contractors.

Is there a structure in India or the world, which makes you wish you had designed it?

Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater built in 1935. I visited it in my freshman year in Architecture school and I am still struck by the boldness and audacity of his vision at the time it was created.

Who has been your biggest influence in the world of architecture?

I would name two towering influences, the late Charles Correa ( whom I worked with ) and the late Sri Lankan master Geoffrey Bawa.

What is the first thing you do when you get into the office in the morning ?

Open my iPad, look at my long To-Do list prepared the night before, and then get to it.

One occupational hazard with being an architect, that you have personally experienced?

Long and tiring hours of travel for site visits.

Best planned city in the world according to you ?

Manhattan, New York . Every time I visit, I am amazed by the vision of its founders. The planned grid of streets surrounding Central Park is still so easy to navigate.

What is the one project on your wishlist that you haven't worked on yet?

An Art Museum or Cultural Centre.

During the duration of a project, which part do you enjoy the most personally ?

I enjoy the ideating phase the most, putting together a collage of ideas and mood boards.

Your work has come to represent a tropical style of architecture in India. Can you tell us what are the elements that inform this approach?

The use of local material, a blurring of boundaries between built form and the natural environment, and a climate and context-sensitive approach that is sustainable.

Krishnan House, Bengaluru.
