She’s the powerhouse behind the hugely iconic store, 10 Corso Como, which is the name to follow for all things design
Way back in 1990, Carla single-handedly heralded the era of concept stores with Galleria Carla Sozzani at 10 Corso Como, Milan. Enamoured by New York City in the 80s, the ex-editor of Elle and Vogue did something unthinkable at that time – she turned a garage in a forgotten part of Milan into an elegant photography gallery. It evolved to include fashion, decor, a restaurant and even a hotel with only three suites. Eventually, she opened more concept stores in Tokyo, Seoul, Shanghai, Beijing and New York, on the occasion of its 25th anniversary in September 2016.
Born in Mantua, her vision for this eponymous gallery was that of an vibrant Italian piazza – a melting pot where curious people come together, experience art, shop for beautiful things, sip on wine, eat delicious food, buy books and rest for a while. Her aim to design what she calls a “slow shopping” experience soon became a celebrated boutique where one can find an Azzedine Alaia, a Tom Dixon and a Peter Saville in the same space as a Keith Haring and an Andy Warhol.
Each item in her boutique stores, (that now has an e-commerce site), is curated by her. She chooses things that are new and interesting but more importantly, something that she feel passionately about. She thinks of her galleries as living magazines – a way in which she communicates with the world.
On the weekend, one might find her enjoying a meal at La Pesa, one of the oldest restaurants in Milan. The 69-year-old curator doesn’t often take time off but when she does, it is almost always on a weekday. Her destination of choice is the nearby the fishing village of Portofino, where the sight of water gives her a sense of freedom and opens her mind.
