It is easy to beat the heat when your courtyard is green and pretty

If you are blessed to live in a home that has an open space, a few carefully selected elements and a little imagination is all you will need to pull off this breezy style

With the days getting hotter, it’s the perfect time to consider giving your backyard or outdoor area a quick, cool facelift. Wherever you may stand in your décor tastes, you don’t have to look too far for some creative ways to show off your Indian roots in any part of the home. Here are some tips on how you can recreate this look:

Colour and scent – If you aren’t constrained by space, there are any number of things you can do with landscaping or planning a garden area, but in a smaller verandah, try adding colourful bougainvillaea or marigolds for a hit of bright, cheery colour. If you love scented candles indoors, replicate the mood outside by potting perfumed Tuberose (Rajnigandha), Cestrum (Raat ki Rani) or a delicate Jasmine in different sized planters.

Earthy and grounded – The terracotta instantly makes this outdoor space prettier with a cooling and earthy feel perfect for the rising mercury. We’re not saying go 100% matchy-matchy but having a range of pieces that play into the ‘natural’ theme is a great idea. Jute stools and side tables, wicker baskets and holdalls, linen upholstery and cane furniture is key to this earthy vibe. Place a suspended balloon swing in the corner of the area for a cosy spot to enjoy a get-together or settle in for a tall glass of lemonade and a quiet read.

Indian and cool – Everything from the traditional bolsters to the printed cushions and charming charpoy harks back to glorious old world aangans that have been Instagram worthy long before hashtags ever existed. Add a stunning printed dhurrie or heirloom rug to instantly elevate the look and create an alternate option for lounging or kids play area.

Showing off your Indian roots is easy with key accent pieces that can make any outdoor space your little oasis of calm away from the chaos.
